How to Choose the Right Ilse Crawford IKEA Ceramic Table Lamp for Your Home

The long-running partnership between British designer Ilse Crawford and IKEA has entered its next phase with the release of HALGATT, a pair of everyday table lamps made from stoneware, linen, and brass. Coming eleven years after their famous SINNERLIG bamboo pendant lamp first launched, this new project focuses on bringing traditional, high-quality materials to everyday spaces at an affordable price.

The collection consists of two distinct lighting fixtures that take very different approaches to the classic base-and-shade setup. Instead of creating pieces that shout for attention, Crawford’s goal was to make lighting that supports the existing energy of a room, working just as well on a bedside table as it does on a living room sideboard or a busy desk.

“My inspiration for HALGATT comes from how we live our lives. They have a versatility that supports the decor rather than dominating it – and are just as suitable in the living room as in a dining room, a bedroom or a work area.”

Simple shapes

While both lamps share a common design language, their shapes create entirely different moods. The first option is a white stoneware block that feels quite architectural and solid. It uses a clean, square base paired with a matching white shade, relying on its strong outline and the natural texture of the ceramic to make an impact.

The second lamp takes a more traditional route, using a rounded ceramic cylinder as its foundation. This base is finished with a rich, dark glaze that gives the smooth surface a lot of visual depth. Crawford pairs this dark cylinder with a beige woven linen shade, letting the different textures work against one another.

Small details and mood control

The beauty of these lamps lies in the specific choices made during development. Rather than aiming for flawless, factory-perfect surfaces, the stoneware bases feature deliberate imperfections. This gives each piece a slightly handmade feel that mimics expensive studio pottery.

Functionality is built directly into the design rather than hidden away. Each lamp features a prominent brass dimmer switch attached straight to the side of the ceramic base. This dial allows you to easily crank the brightness up for reading or wind it right down to create a quiet evening atmosphere. It is a practical addition that also adds a small, bright pop of metal to the otherwise earthy colour palette.

A lasting approach to everyday objects

What makes this release notable is how it handles the idea of longevity. These objects are built to look good during the day when the bulb is turned off, functioning as small sculptures on a shelf or desk.

“In my view, good interiors are well-lived-in spaces because they reflect and support the people who live there. But without them being lit, the lamps will continue to be equally aesthetically appealing because they are designed so beautifully.”

Crawford’s approach avoids passing trends, focusing instead on proportions and reliable materials that hold their ground over time. By putting these ideas into mass production, the collection manages to offer genuine quality and a sense of permanence without the high price tag usually attached to designer lighting.
