BenQ MindDuo Max Turns the Office Floor Lamp Into Child-Friendly Lighting

Header: BenQ Corporation

MindDuo Max represents a European office floor lamp redesigned for children. The lamp design draws inspiration from the Chinese tradition of placing office floor lamps in their children’s rooms to serve as desk lamps for kids. It is believed that office lamps are a better choice due to broad and bright lighting, which prevents children from becoming myopic (unable to see far-away objects clearly). Realising that the usual design of an office lamp doesn’t really match children’s home décor, BenQ Corporation produced a lamp more adjusted to their needs and aesthetics.

MindDuo Max

MindDuo Max is a study lamp specifically tailored for kids. In today’s society, which values academic achievements highly, children spend numerous hours at their desk. Faced with prolonged studying hours, parents are increasingly looking for lighting solutions best suited for their offspring. MindDuo Max, designed by Japanese designer Kazuya Koike for BenQ Corporation, replaces the cold, rigid office lamp style with child-friendly organic curves and rounded shapes. Informed by fairy tales, the design draws inspiration from the magical world of mushrooms. The MindDuo Max’s rounded head with gills-like slats creates an inviting atmosphere, while the elegant body of the lamp mimics organic growth.

Smart features

The lamp consists of a forward-bending stem that centres the light directly above the desk. Its grid design shields direct glare while keeping sufficient brightness, providing better eye protection. Additionally, the diffused glare allows children to focus on their task rather than being distracted by harsh lighting. Packed with smart features, the lamp is equipped with a light sensor and four automatic lighting modes. Thanks to a 24GHz millimetre-wave sensor, similar to those used in autonomous driving, the lamp automatically turns on when a child sits below it. Subsequently, the lamp also automatically turns off 10 minutes after they leave, as the sensor registers inactivity.

Environmentally conscious design

Apart from solving the problem of forgetfulness, the smart automatic feature also preserves energy and reduces the carbon footprint. With a lifespan of 50,000 hours, the LED lights provide up to 17 years of use, reducing waste and the need for new resources to manufacture replacement products, ultimately helping protect the planet.

The MindDuo Max kids lamp combines intelligent functionality with fun, playful design to ensure brighter, more enjoyable studying. Designed for kids but suitable for adults as well, the lamp is a perfect choice for heartwarming reading moments that children and parents can enjoy together. MindDuo Max lamp, designed by Kazuya Koike and manufactured by BenQ Corporation, has won a LIT Lighting Design Award as the best submission in the Desk Lamps, Floor Lamps category. Every year, the international LIT Lighting Design Award honours the best of the best in lighting product design, architectural lighting design and entertainment lighting design.
