Fibonacci Geometry Gives the Tesser 3D-Printed Lamp Its Distinctive Form

Header: Ridezign

Tesser is a sculptural lighting collection inspired by fleeting glimpses of New York City life. The lamp’s geometrical pattern resembles large New York Cityscapes, but the rigid grid of the design is softened by a warm glow. Through this contrast, the Tesser lamp turns large urban spaces into intimate experiences. Every lamp interacts with perception, transforming the lighting into both a spatial and emotional experience.

Fibonacci sequence and additive manufacturing

Tesser’s unique characteristic is its precision engenered proportins. Based on the Fibonacci sequence, the proportions ensure a sense of balance and harmony. Volumes expand through carefully calibrated proportions, balancing architectural precision with organic fluidity while echoing the city’s natural rhythm. The lamps are produced from recycled materials through advanced 3D printing technology.

While many other manufacturers rely on new materials, Ridezign elevates ocean plastic from a pollutant to a durable, artistic piece. By employing bioplastics (PLA) or recycled plastics (PETG), the collection challenges long-held perceptions of plastic as a low-value, disposable material by turning it into refined, heirloom-quality objects.

The Tesser 5:3

Tesser collection comes in three dimensions and six colour options: Lavender, Butter, Amber, Granite, Guava and Cherry. The Tesser 5:3 is the smallest lamp in the collection. Measuring at 100 × 100 × 100 mm, a small table lamp is defined by softness, depth and proportion. Its layered surface catches and diffuses light gently, resulting in an atmospheric glow that changes subtly over time. The Tesser 5:3 brings this subtle glow and sculptural presence to bookshelves, coffee tables, bedside cabinets and other smaller spaces. Compatible with a 0.7W LED bulb at 3000K colour temperature, the lamp also features a 1500 mAh rechargeable battery that allows up to 20 hours of cordless use.

The Tesser 5:8

The calm verticality of the Tesser 5:8 (100 × 100 × 161 mm) lends the lamp an architectural quality. The shifting interplay between translucency and density created by the lamp’s stacked geometry adds a sense of layer to the light. Warm, ambient light is perfect for bedside reading or as a compact desk lamp, bringing depth to your everyday tasks. The lamp features a 1W LED at 3000K and an internal 3200 mAh rechargeable battery that offers up to 30 hours of illumination on a single charge.

The Tesser 8:3

The Tesser 8:3 measures 100 × 100 × 137 mm. Compact in size but sculptural in presence, the lamp provides a sense of rhythm and materiality. When turned off, the lamp appears graphic and rigid, boasting geometrical quality and translucence. However, when the light is on, it emits a soft, diffused glow that reveals the depth inside the layered surface. With a 0.7W LED at 3000K and a 1500 mAh rechargeable battery, the lamp can shine up to 20 hours on a single charge.

The Tesser Collection, winner of the LIT Lighting Design Award in the Decorative Accent Lamps category, shows how the 3D printing process elevates plastic into a new era of experiential design. Lying at the intersection of design, sustainability and innovation, the Tesser collection by Ridezign demonstrates that sustainable design doesn’t require aesthetic compromise.
