The world of gelato just got a high-end makeover in Barcelona. Gelato Collection, the latest project by renowned chef Albert Adrià, is a carefully curated experience that takes inspiration from perfumery. Adrià, named the World’s 2nd Best Chef in 2024 and the World’s Best Pastry Chef in 2015, has introduced a concept where each gelato is treated like a numbered perfume, forming an evolving collection of flavors.
Designed by El Equipo Creativo
To bring this vision to life, Adrià collaborated with El Equipo Creativo, the Barcelona-based design studio known for shaping unique hospitality and gastronomy spaces. Led by architects Oliver Franz Schmidt, Natali Canas del Pozo, and Lucas Echeveste Lacy, the studio has previously worked with Adrià on acclaimed projects like Tickets, La Dolça, and Pakta. Their challenge was to create a space that highlights the artistry of gelato while offering an elegant, inviting atmosphere.
A minimalist interior that puts gelato in the spotlight
The interior of Gelato Collection is all about contrast: cold and warm, refined yet simple. The gelato display case is at the heart of the space and the true focal point. Designed to look like a meticulously wrapped gift, the display case evokes the elegance of perfume bottles or delicate jewelry boxes, enhancing the perception of each gelato as a unique and exquisite treat.
Wrapped in fluted glass, it enhances the feeling of coolness while making the gelato colors pop like precious gems. This centerpiece is set against metallic and champagne-toned walls that add a touch of luxury and movement to the space.
Lighting that feels like ice
One of the most prominent features of Gelato Collection is the lighting. Three large hexagonal lamps made of textured glass float above the entrance, casting a soft, cool glow that mimics the purity of ice. Visible from La Rambla, they invite passersby to step inside and experience a refreshing escape from Barcelona’s warm climate.
Masters of hospitality design
Founded in Barcelona, El Equipo Creativo has built a reputation for designing some of the most visually and conceptually engaging hospitality spaces worldwide. Their work emphasizes storytelling, local influences, and handcrafted details that bring authenticity to each project. With more than 50 international awards and a portfolio spanning four continents, their influence in design continues to grow.
