Nestled in the enchanting island of Mykonos, where azure waters meet pristine white buildings, lies Tuya Mykonos, a stunning restaurant and bar that has garnered accolades for its outstanding design. This exquisite project, envisioned by the creative minds at Twins Studio and led by the designer Mihai Popescu, pays homage to the thriving bougainvillea plant that has graced the location for over three decades. A true masterpiece that seamlessly blends contemporary elements with the splendor of nature, Tuya Mykonos is a destination that promises an unforgettable experience for all who step through its doors.
The genesis of Tuya Mykonos was rooted in a profound appreciation for nature’s marvels. Before the first sketch was drawn or the blueprint conceived, the central idea was to create a sanctuary for the beloved bougainvillea plant that had thrived on the site for more than 30 years. Twins Studio embarked on a journey to showcase the vibrant beauty of the bougainvillea, making it the centerpiece of their design. This vision set the tone for a project that would transcend the boundaries of conventional hospitality and celebrate the innate allure of the natural world.
To accentuate the lush beauty of the bougainvillea and harmonize with its tender elegance, the design team chose metal to craft a contemporary arbor, replacing the rustic structure that had previously adorned the site. This ingenious choice not only enhances the plant’s prominence but also infuses the space with modern aesthetics, inviting guests to immerse themselves in an architectural masterpiece where nature and contemporary design intertwine.
Every aspect of Tuya Mykonos was carefully curated to reflect the essence of its surroundings. The terrazzo floor, meticulously crafted with precision, celebrates the organic and irregular pavements of the island’s charming alleys while paying homage to the traditional flooring of a nearby church. This subtle nod to local heritage establishes an emotional connection, making the restaurant an integral part of the island’s cultural fabric.
Tuya Mykonos showcases an array of bespoke furniture, each piece carefully designed and crafted at Twins Studio’s workshop in Bucharest, Romania. The choice of Meranti wood, known for its exceptional outdoor durability and originating from Asia, adds an exotic touch to the space. These custom-made furnishings perfectly complement the green marble accents, creating a harmonious interplay of textures and colors that evoke a sense of tranquility and luxury.
Drawing inspiration from the vibrant colors of the local architecture, lush shades of green dominate the ambiance of Tuya Mykonos. This design choice seamlessly integrates the restaurant into its natural surroundings, making it a captivating oasis that invites guests to bask in the splendor of Mykonos while indulging in a remarkable culinary experience.
Tuya Mykonos stands tall as a testament to the power of visionary design, where the splendor of nature and contemporary creativity coalesce in perfect harmony. Recognized as the Winner of SIT Furniture Design Awards 2023, this remarkable restaurant and bar embrace the exuberance of the bougainvillea, making it a sanctuary for both patrons and the beloved plant. With its meticulous attention to detail, thoughtful choice of materials, and immersive ambiance, Tuya Mykonos promises an unrivaled dining experience that celebrates the essence of Mykonos and captivates the hearts of all who visit.
