Discover How Bold Exterior Design Combines with Calming Interior Spaces in a Leafy Melbourne Suburb

Hidden in one of Melbourne’s tranquil leafy suburbs, the Kernan Residence is a triumph of sculptural and spatial elegance. Designed by Jack Fugaro Architect, this stunning home draws inspiration from its bold exterior form, translating its sculptural essence into an interior that exudes calm sophistication. Through refined detailing and a rich material palette, the residence achieves a harmonious balance between grandeur and intimacy.

Thoughtful spatial design

The spatial arrangement of the Kernan Residence reflects a thoughtful design philosophy. Large, voluminous spaces invite light and air, while intimate nooks provide refuge for rest and relaxation. The more expansive areas – such as the kitchen island and entry foyer – encourage social interaction, fostering impromptu gatherings.

Meanwhile, the home’s centerpiece, a sculptural staircase, commands attention from the moment you enter. Positioned centrally within the floor plan, this staircase serves as both a functional and artistic focal point, offering a gallery-like experience while defining the surrounding spaces.

The central staircase enhances vertical circulation and elevates the overall living experience. Its sculptural form adds a sense of intrigue, while its placement thoughtfully defines adjacent living spaces, creating a cozy and intimate ambiance without sacrificing openness.

Heightened interior experience

The design brief for the project was clear: to heighten the interior experience by drawing directly from the exterior’s solid sculptural aesthetic. This vision is achieved through a series of considered spaces that surprise and delight. Double-height volumes flood the interior with natural light, creating moments of awe while seamlessly connecting the upper-level private retreats and sleeping areas. These transitions between open and secluded spaces engage the occupants in a dynamic and immersive living experience.

Jack Fugaro’s vision

The lead designer, Jack Fugaro, has infused this project with his hallmark approach, which carefully considers site, program, and budget while exploring light, shadow, materiality, and texture. His designs consistently reflect a rigorous and cohesive vision, making him a prominent figure in Melbourne’s architectural scene.

Completed in November 2023, the Kernan Residence is a testament to Fugaro’s commitment to creating architecture that resonates on both functional and emotional levels. The project’s success is also a result of the collaboration with Ross Gardum for lighting design and Jafer Constructions for the build.

Unsurprisingly, the Kernan Residence has garnered acclaim, winning the BLT Built Design Award for Jury’s Favorite in Interior Design – Houses. This recognition and many others highlight the project’s excellence in balancing sculptural aesthetics with a warm, livable interior – a true masterpiece of contemporary design.
