Tampak Siring Brings Tropical Minimalism to Bali’s Green Hills

Tampak Siring Resort is a hotel complex currently being constructed in the hills of Ubud, in Bali’s Gianyar regency, with luxurious villas, hotel rooms, restaurants and wellness areas spread over an oasis of a 7,000 m² site. The architecture and the interiors were designed by Indonesian architect Andra Matin, of Studio Andra Matin, for the developer NEXA. Although construction is still underway, as we’ve seen, the project has already won the “Resort – Luxury” category for architectural design at the LIV Hospitality Design Awards.

The name “Tampak Siring”

The resort takes its name from Tampaksiring, a district of Gianyar northeast of Ubud that is best known for Pura Tirta Empul, a water temple built around a spring in 962. Here, visitors bathe under 30 stone spouts as a purification ritual called melukat. On the hill above the temple is the Tampaksiring Palace, built between 1957 and 1963 as a country palace for Sukarno, Indonesia’s first president.

Stone walls and green roofs

NEXA describes the design as “tropical minimalism“, and the renderings shared by the developer show buildings made mostly of stone and glass. The main hotel block has three floors, and its walls are to be covered in rough grey stone and floor-to-ceiling glass set between stone pillars. Plants are set to hang over the edges of the floors, and the infinity pool will run along a timber deck. On the roof of this block, a set of small pavilions under pitched, four-sided roofs will house the rooftop lounge.

The villas will offer guests more privacy, as they are currently being built apart from the hotel in a row of separate buildings. Each one will be topped with a planted roof, which NEXA calls a “private green rooftop“.

The rooms

Inside, the renderings show walls finished in a light brown plaster under dark timber ceilings with exposed beams. The beds are low and wide, placed on top of timber platforms, with benches, tables and other decorative pieces filling up the space in the same “wooden minimalist” style.

Some of the rooms have a glass wall looking onto a small enclosed garden, planted with large tropical plants against a wall of rough stone. In some bathrooms, perhaps the most luxurious ones, the bathtubs are carved out of single blocks of stone and placed right beside that glass wall, making for truly relaxing bath moments.

The facilities

Guests will have a reception and lounge area, a restaurant, a spa, a sauna, a gym, a yoga space, the infinity pool and the rooftop lounge. The restaurant, an open pavilion under a large pyramid-shaped roof, will open onto a timber deck beside a pond filled with water lilies. The resort is due to be completed in the second quarter of 2028.
