ORI – Moving Within Self concept proposes a peaceful oasis in Lagos, Nigeria. Rooted in Yoruba philosophy, the landscape intervention explores the intersection of placemaking with collective and personal identity. In Yoruba philosophy, ‘Ori‘ represents an intuitive guide, as well as personal destiny and the potential for achieving a good life. Ori’s dedication to personal divinity is similar to Jung’s concept of individuation and the quest for self-realisation in Western Philosophy.
Botanical Garden, Riverwalk, Water Show and Golf
The concept consists of four distinct but connected landscapes: The Botanical Garden, Golf Course, Riverwalk, and Water Show. Every one of these stages represents a phase in the journey toward self-awareness: Unawareness, Initial Exploration, Increased Awareness, and Self-Understanding.
By going through these four landscapes that represent different stages toward self-awareness, users move through space but also through an emotional and psychological journey. Every area is designed to encourage thought, emotion and inspire action, leading to uncovering your inner selves.

The journey to self-discovery
The project by Olumide Oguntolu and Tayo Folorunsho uses Human scale, Parametric Design, AfroFuturism, and Biomimicry to create spatial volumes rooted in African patterns and natural systems. African Yoruba mythology is incorporated into the spatial sequencing, forms and material logic of ORI. Rather than treating indigenous African philosophy as a decoration, the ORI concept turns it into landscape design. Every landscape corresponds with a single stage of a journey to self-discovery:
- Botanical Garden – represents introspection and grounding
- Golf Course – mental challenge and self-evaluation
- Riverwalk – symbolises movement, transition, and connection with the environment
- Water Show – shows aspiration, awe, and limitless potential
By following the path that leads to true self-discovery, inner harmony and connection to our deeper self, users also connect with others in a wave of shared consciousness and mutual understanding.

Beautiful oases in the busy heart of Lagos
Located in the busy and layered cityscape of Lagos, the landscape architecture offers a moment of pause while at the same time serving as a medium for healing, reflection and cultural continuity. The peaceful oasis in the heart of a busy urban environment celebrates the water that surrounds the city and the prosperous state and its potential.

Designed for the ecological context of Lagos, Ori embraces native planting, climate-adaptive form, and water-sensitive design principles. Biomimetic landscape integrates nature-inspired design (including natural drainage, biodiversity and resilience) into outdoor spaces. The project ensures cultural continuity with African philosophy while creating contemporary design for a new era. By prioritising wellbeing and inclusivity, the landscape design becomes a key element for human wellbeing.

ORI- Moving Within Self is a representation of Afrofuturist philosophy-driven landscapes across Africa. The project that relies on African philosophy to create forward-thinking design innovation. ORI – Moving Within Self won the 2026 AIDA Africa International Design Award as the best Landscape Architecture design of the year.
