Blueprint and Krasnogorov Studio Bring Botanical Forms into Lighting Design

The Krasnogorov Studio x Blueprint collection is a set of eight lights carved in solid wood, each one shaped after a flower or a plant, named Cyclamen, Freesia, the floor lamp Iris, Orchid and the Pothos series. The pieces were designed by, as the name suggests, New York lighting and furniture brand Blueprint alongside woodworker Vladimir Krasnogorov.

“Since wood is my world, I was curious to partner with a lighting studio whose materials felt different from my focus.”

The chandeliers and the floor lamp

The Cyclamen was named after a flower whose stem winds into a coil once its bloom has passed, the word itself having come from the Greek for circle. Its wooden flowers were placed on three tiers that spread out from the centre, held up by brass arms, with a globe of blown glass having been tucked into every one of them.

The Freesia, meanwhile, was inspired by the plant’s habit of carrying all of its flowers along one side of the stem. To recreate it, the studio turned six wooden shades by hand and split them into two rows of three, with every shade hanging from a horizontal brass rod.

The Iris Floor Lamp, on the other hand, is based on the rhizome, which is the thick stem that grows sideways under the soil and keeps the iris standing. Put simply, a heavy wooden base works as the lamp’s own rhizome, holding up a tall stem that then splits into flowers placed at different heights.

The wall lights

The Orchid was inspired by the twisting shape of the flower in bloom, with a thin wooden stem rising up the wall into a single curved petal, complemented by a light in either blown glass or alabaster. Pothos, named after a climbing houseplant, is made of wooden leaves and comes in four versions, from a single leaf up to four.

In the Pothos 2, the two leaves were fixed on one straight rod, while the three leaves of the Pothos 3 were placed on arms that can be arranged in a straight line, a zigzag or a soft curve. The Pothos 4, in turn, only gets its final shape once it is installed, with its arms having been arranged depending on the room.

Wood and metal

The wood comes in three finishes: cerused (a white pigment was rubbed into the grain to bring it out), tobacco (a deep brown) and ebonised (stained black). These can be paired with metal details in brass, bronze, pewter, nickel or enamel.

According to Blueprint, these eight lights are only the first part of an ongoing collaboration with Krasnogorov, with new designs already being developed.
