The Ziggy Lighting Collection Inspired by Mesopotamian Gardens

Thomas Cooper Studio, an East Los Angeles-based lighting brand led by Sally Thomas Cooper and Jason Kai Cooper, has recently announced the launch of its newest collection: Ziggy. Inspired by the Ziggurat, the stepped temple structures of Mesopotamia that functioned as connections between earth and heaven, the collection reinterprets this enduring architectural motif and applies it to the modern home.

The Ziggurat vision

The Ziggurat once symbolised the link between the terrestrial and the divine, a “man-made mountain” that reached towards the ethereal realms above. This form was later famously embraced by Art Deco architects of the 1920s to represent technological progress and upward momentum. Capturing this same spirit, the Ziggy collection fuses that ancient, terraced look with a contemporary, minimalist vision.

“Ziggy is an exploration of the ziggurat’s iconic stepped silhouette, stripped down to its essential, modernist core. We wanted to celebrate that sense of monumental ascent, bridging the gap between the heavy, tiered temples of the past and the ethereal, glowing perspectives of contemporary design.”

Sally Thomas Cooper, co-founder of Thomas Cooper Studio.

Bronze frames and glass

The Ziggy collection is built from angled bronze frames that rise in stepped tiers, holding tilted lenses of sand-cast, textured and seeded glass. Instead of the heavy, closed form of the ancient ziggurat, Thomas Cooper Studio uses the stepped outline as a light frame, with the glass adding a texture that diffuses the warm glow of the fixture.

By stripping the ziggurat form down to its essential lines, the studio has created a sculptural piece that feels like it could become a classic statement in any modernist home.
