The TYPE-XIII Atelier Oï project, a set of fashion-inspired lighting projects, is made in collaboration between A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE and atelier oï, the Swiss architectural and design studio. The collab originally presented at last year’s edition of Milan Design Week is now available for sale.

A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE and atelier oï
The company ISSEY MIYAKE is known for expanding the boundaries of cloth-making through partnerships with different industries and disciplines, prioritising the process of creating. Both A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE and atelier oï are brought together by their commitment to teamwork, material exploration, and craftsmanship.

The creative process aims to combine “a piece of cloth” with “a piece of wire”, paired with a single source of light. The project resulted in two different lighting series: the portable O series and the pendant lighting A series. Both series were presented at Milan Design Week 2025 next to the fashion clothing that inspired them.

The O series
The first released series, the O series of small portable lighting, contains three different lampshade styles, developed jointly with Ambientec, a Japanese company specialising in portable lighting. The smaller scale of the lighting allows users to move the light freely through space, harmonising with numerous environments.

The O series draws inspiration from the fragility and beauty of flowers. The lights can be rearranged in the environment, comparable to the way flowers are arranged around the house to create a welcoming and inviting experience. Similar to the bouquet, the O series can be organised to highlight the beauty of the surroundings or to set the mood of the place. Like a flower in bloom, the luminaires emanate gentle, diffuse light through organic pleats, thus quietly enhancing everyday life.

Wire frames by atelier oï
atelier oï designed an elegant oval wire frame for this series. Lampshade includes Steam Stretch, a recycled polyester frequently used in Issey Miyake’s manufacturing process. This innovative technique that pre-waves elements of design into clothing allows the lampshade to shrink after heating to create a three-dimensional pleated texture. The shade can be removed from the wire and cut to adapt the shape and size of the luminaire. The colour of the light can be adjusted across four levels from daylight white to a warm incandescent tone.

The A series
A pendant luminaire series named the A series was made from three-dimensional knit fabric known as TYPE-A, which was the starting point of A-POC, a subbrand of ISSEY MIYAKE, founded in 1998. The shape of the lighting fixture was pre-knitted into the fabric, and the wire frame was later added to give the luminaire a sculptural form. Just like with the O series, the shade can be removed from the wire and cut to adapt its shape and size to selected spaces. The creation of the A series was carried out in partnership with Spanish lighting brand PARACHILNA.

Three portable lamps from the O series are on sale starting from April 2026. TYPE-XIII Atelier Oï project explores the use of cloth in the realm of lighting to create delicate, yet powerful luminaires. Its organic design and adaptability bring tranquillity to the daily lives of its users.
