The collaboration between instrument manufacturer Roland and Karimoku, a Japanese furniture company, has produced two distinct luxury piano models. Entitled KF-20 and KF-25, both models are inspired by cabinet design, making them a seamless fit in any home. Two historic companies combined their extensive expertise to create a small-scale piano that provides the functionality and sound of a concert grand piano.

Ancient wood processing techniques
Globally recognised for its meticulous production process, the Japanese furniture manufacturer, established in 1940, combines advanced machinery with hand-finishing techniques, including coating, polishing, and assembly by hand. Karimoku artisans employed the traditional time-honoured local wood-crafting techniques Hikimono and Sashimono to create distinct instruments, each featuring unique grain patterns that change appearance following a natural ageing process.

Kiyola KF-20 and Kiyola KF-25
KF-25 is characterised by straight lines and striking angles, showcasing a clear profile, both traditional and modern. The piano comes in a deep-toned Smoked Oak finish, which complements its linear design. Its curvy cousin, KF-20, possesses a somewhat smoother presence. The model’s rounded edges create an elegant style that perfectly complements the natural lines of a home. Combining both Japanese and Scandinavian design, the piano allows for many customisation opportunities as it comes in four colours, including naturalistic Pure Oak and Walnut, a gentle Sheer White, and a vibrant Celadon Green.

Performances
Behind the finishes, inside cabinets skilfully made by Karimoku, Roland’s recognisable Piano Reality Modelling technology resides, providing an immersive sonic experience. A PHA-50 keyboard with high-precision sensing provides a realistic grand piano feel and sound. The sound’s authenticity meets the demands of music professionals. Kiyola Series pianos produce warm tones that match the natural appearance of their cabinets. The bench that comes with every Kiyola piano provides ergonomic support while playing. The wide sitting area distributes weight evenly, while the carefully designed arched shape improves posture. Three pedal units below add to the sound’s authenticity.

Entering the digital realm
Beyond its premium acoustic experience, the Kiyola Series also integrates an array of digital features. For starters, two headphone jacks (stereo 1/4-inch and stereo miniature) allow users to plug the headphones in and practice in silence. That way, the pianists can practice at any time of day or night to perfect their craft without disturbing others. Apart from the headphones, the Kiyola Series pianos can also be connected to computers and flash storage devices via USB ports.

The Roland Piano App
The series is also equipped with on-board Bluetooth, which can be used to connect the piano with a smartphone or tablet. Musicians can play along with their favourite song, and KIYOLA’s speakers will blend the sound of the piano and music. The Bluetooth can be connected to the Roland Piano App, which provides numerous features, including an option of editing tones, practice tools, and digital sheet music with notes you can display on your iPad or phone.

The craftsmanship of Karimoku and the innovation of Roland come together, bringing the best of both worlds. By combining seemingly contradictory approaches: analogue and digital, traditional and contemporary, the Kiyola Series embodies the Japanese concept of harmony.
