Header: TAB 2026 Curatorial Team
The eighth edition of Tallinn Architecture Biennale (TAB) will take place between September 9 – 13, 2026, bringing exhibitions, workshops, lectures, concerts and public events to the Estonian capital. Organised by the Estonian Centre for Architecture, the biennale will include a curated main programme and an interdisciplinary satellite programme taking place in Tallinn, Tartu and Kuressaare. The event was announced on June 2, 2026, with You Reap What You Sow: An In-Between Landscape action, when the seed of TAB was planted through a symbolic act of sowing.
The cost of cheapness in architecture
Titled How Much? This year’s Biennale explores the costs and the production of space, discovering new understandings of affordability, value and responsibility. In a time when architecture is shaped by economic pressures, labour issues, climate crisis and rarity of resources, it is difficult to determine what cheapness means and who pays for it. The opening will take place in Tallinn Linnahall, the long-abandoned building that has been in the centre of public debate for a long time. The building that’s described as too expensive to reconstruct but also too expensive to demolish powerfully embodies the biennale’s main theme.
TAB symposiums and themes
A two-day symposium is scheduled for September 10 and 11 at the Estonian Academy of Arts. The first day will centre on adaptation, reuse, and special transformations under the title To Be Continued…The second day symposium, Sounds Expensive, will reflect on the main curatorial theme by exploring the illusion of cheapness in situations in which low initial costs postpone actual costs rather than reducing them.
On the same day, Resonance by Aru Ma-Architects, the winner of the Budget Bougie Installation Competition, will be unveiled in front of Tammsaare Park’s outdoor gallery. The same space will host the Vision Competition exhibition, From Void to Value: Revisioning Tallinn’s Old Town, which gathers proposals for the transformation of a long-unresolved urban void in the city’s historic centre.
International exhibitions at the Estonian Museum of Architecture
The Estonian Museum of Architecture will host the Capital-A Affordable Architecture exhibition that explores the notion of affordability in today’s architecture, wondering who architecture is accessible to and the value it creates. Apart from the Estonian Academy of Arts, the show will bring together projects from Vienna, Prague, London, Kharkiv and other European universities.
Satellite program
The satellite program will take the festival outside of the Estonian capital. The Kuressaare Town Hall Gallery will host an international exhibition Louis I. Kahn and Residential Architecture in Kuressaare, dedicated to one of the 20th century’s most prominent architects. Open House Tallinn and Open House Tarty urban festivals will allow access to little-known buildings or those closed to the public. The collaboration with the Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) will bring documentaries on architecture, hidden costs, materials and heritage to the Kumu Art Museum, while three performances will be presented in partnership with the Independent Dance Festival.
Urban space workshops
RAW: Waste-Sourced And Fast-Growing Bio-Based Materials exhibition at Tallinn University of Technology will highlight the possible applications of waste-based and renewable biomaterials in architecture and construction. Workshops How Much Ex. Change? and Urban Intervention will focus on time, value, labour and constraints of urban space interventions.
The 2026 program is shaped by the curatorial team, which includes Siim Tanel Tõnisson, Kertu Johanna Jõeste, and Ra Martin Puhkan of Stuudio TÄNA in partnership with Mark Aleksander Fischer and Mira Samonig. Articulated through the question “How much?” the event sheds light on architectural costs and accompanying constraints that have remained suppressed in much of architectural discourse.
