Looking for Alpine Chic? Löwen Hotel Montafon Has More Than Just Snow-Capped Views

In the picturesque mountain village of Schruns, Austria stands the Löwen Hotel Montafon, originally built in 1974; this four-star gem underwent a complete renovation in 2013, transforming it into a contemporary alpine retreat. A decade later, its allure remains steadfast, now elevated by a 2023 extension that seamlessly harmonizes with its existing structures.

At the heart of this transformation are the designers from Monoplan AG, led by Kamila Kawecka, with contributions from Anna Kaltwasser and Monika Blach. Their vision blends modern alpine chic with a profound respect for regional traditions, a synthesis that recently earned the hotel the prestigious LIV Hospitality Design Awards for Interior Design in the Mountain Destination category.

A modern Alpine aesthetic

The Löwen Hotel’s original redesign introduced a contemporary alpine-chic style, drawing inspiration from the traditional architecture of the Montafon region. The latest extension mirrors this approach yet introduces a distinct modernity. Long wooden slats on the façade and a white base – a nod to the typical alpine houses – create a visual dialogue between past and present. Inside, natural materials such as wood, stone, and glass are paired with warm tones, crafting spaces that exude comfort and sophistication.

The interior design, enriched by elegant details and high-quality finishes, showcases regional craftsmanship. Traditional Montafon cross-stitch patterns have been abstracted and reimagined in ceiling panels, lighting fixtures, and wardrobe fronts. The interplay between traditional and modern elements is especially evident in the rooms, where rustic wooden panels complement faceted tiles and classic bathroom fittings. Meanwhile, newly introduced superior and deluxe rooms, along with suites featuring freestanding bathtubs and panoramic views, redefine alpine luxury.

Spaces to celebrate and unwind

The bar, centrally located on the ground floor, serves as a lively hub, while the hotel’s extensive Löwen-SPA offers a tranquil retreat. Spanning 3,000 square meters, the spa includes an outdoor pool, a diverse sauna landscape, waterbed relaxation rooms, and an array of massage and beauty treatments – a sanctuary designed for ultimate relaxation after a day in the mountains.

Culinary experiences at the Löwen Hotel are as memorable as the surrounding landscape. Chef Thomas Carvalho de Sousa and his team craft seasonal and regional dishes that shine at the three Gault Millau-toque-awarded Löwen Stube. Guests can also savor international cuisine with a regional twist at Brasserie Leonies or indulge in the exquisite offerings at the Löwen Restaurant, which features an abundant breakfast buffet, afternoon snacks, and sumptuous six-course dinners. The evening doesn’t end without a visit to the legendary Löwengrube club, where live music and a relaxed ambiance set the stage for memorable nights.
