This International Pink Day, we celebrate a design that goes beyond the expected. Forget institutional beige, Reinoldi Comprehensive School in Dortmund, Germany, embraces a bold and beautiful pink facade, claiming the top prize in Architectural Design – Educational at the BLT Built Design Awards.
Designed by SSP AG with lead designer Thomas Schmidt, the school’s striking exterior isn’t just for show. The playful use of pink reflects a thoughtful approach to fostering a positive learning environment.
The impetus for the new school came from a changing educational landscape. The City of Dortmund sought a design that reflected modern pedagogical methods. The winning design by SSP AG goes beyond functionality. Sure, it boasts a well-organized layout with a central communication forum, flexible classrooms, and even a rooftop terrace. However, the architects understood that aesthetics play a crucial role in shaping a student’s experience.
The vibrant pink facade creates a welcoming and cheerful atmosphere. Pops of pink continue inside the school, adding playful accents throughout the common areas and classrooms.
SSP AG refers to the building itself as a “third educator,” alongside teachers and peers. The school’s design actively contributes to a positive learning environment. Studies have shown that colour can significantly impact mood and focus. Pink, often associated with calmness and creativity, fosters a sense of well-being that can enhance learning.
