Tucked away in the serene forests of Stari Glog, a small village near Zagreb, Croatia, Mala Vila is an architectural gem perfect for a wellness getaway. As Croatia’s first forest retreat built entirely on biophilic design principles, it offers a unique experience of sustainable living, naturally connecting structures with the surrounding landscape.
A design rooted in nature
The vision behind Mala Vila is one of harmony, fluidity, and respect for the environment. Rather than imposing itself on the land, the retreat emerges from it, designed in dialogue with the natural flow of trees, meadows, and wildlife. The four compact, mirrored cottages, named Aria, Ignis, Terra, and Aqua, are carefully placed within the forest, ensuring minimal disturbance to the ecosystem. Covering only 8% of the total built-up area, the retreat allows the forest to breathe, grow, and thrive around it.
These structures, reflecting their surroundings, blend into the landscape so effortlessly that they almost disappear among the trees. The mirrored facades provide privacy and create a striking visual effect, amplifying the forest’s beauty while reducing the built environment’s visual footprint.
Beyond aesthetics, Mala Vila’s design is deeply influenced by Vastu Shastra, an ancient Indian architectural philosophy that integrates nature, energy flow, and spatial harmony. Each of the four cottages aligns with these principles, ensuring guests experience physical comfort and a sense of balance and well-being. The cottages are oriented to enhance natural light, optimize airflow, and create a deep connection with the elements they represent: air, fire, water, and earth.
Sustainability as the foundation
Sustainability is not just a concept at Mala Vila but the foundation upon which the retreat is built. Every aspect of its operation reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility:
- Minimal land disruption: The compact design ensures that construction has the least possible impact on the natural terrain.
- Eco-friendly practices: Waste is minimized through daily recycling, composting, and conscious resource use.
- Locally sourced materials: Local craftsmanship and sustainable materials are prioritized, from the furnishings to the organic produce provided for guests.
- Renewable energy: Solar panels and other renewable energy sources contribute to the retreat’s low carbon footprint.
- Plastic-free initiative: The retreat avoids single-use plastics, instead opting for refillable bottles and biodegradable products.
A sanctuary for slow living
Mala Vila offers an invitation to embrace a slower, more intentional way of living. Guests are encouraged to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature through activities like:
- Forest bathing & meditation: Immerse in the sounds and scents of the forest, allowing nature to restore mental and physical well-being.
- Mushroom foraging & village walks: Explore the surrounding countryside and engage with local traditions.
- Bonfire evenings & reading nooks: Unwind in a setting that encourages deep relaxation and contemplation.
- Wellness rituals: From wood-fired hot tubs under the trees to sunrise yoga sessions, the retreat nourishes the body and soul.
A new era of retreat design
Mala Vila goes beyond the hospitality aspect and shows how architecture can foster a deeper connection with nature. Integrating biophilic design, sustainability, and ancient spatial principles serves as a blueprint for the future of eco-conscious retreats.
