Illuminating Inner Balance at Colombian Yoga Studio Garden of the Soul

Garden of the Soul, a yoga and wellness studio from Columbia, uses lighting to create a calm and meditative ambiance. Much like the skill of yoga itself, the design of the studio emanates natural rhythms and sensory balance. Apart from the body’s natural rhythms, the lighting concept also takes note of the space architecture to help support mindful practices. Designed by ESTUDIO DEDÓS, the lighting was set to achieve five key objectives:

  • Reduce visual fatigue
  • Seamlessly combine natural and artificial light
  • Boost the sensory experience of the space
  • Support wellbeing and mindfulness
  • Install adjustable lighting for meditation and yoga classes

Meditative illumination

In order to create a contemplative, serene atmosphere, the lighting designers explored a layered lighting strategy. The strategy combines indirect illumination with soft ambient light and controlled accents to inspire emotional comfort. Glare control and seamless transitions during the day were carefully designed to allow the studio to adapt to different periods – from daytime appointments that have more natural light to late sessions with a more intimate environment. The connection between natural and artificial lighting was supported by a lighting control system that adapts the intensity and scenes to the time of day.

Control and colour technologies

Control systems and dimmable light technology have been put in place to support different yoga exercises and meditation practices. To ensure the proper light intensity and atmosphere for a variety of classes, the control systems are organised in line with the natural daylight reception, which allows artificial illumination to change dynamically over time. A smooth transition from warm white tones to the colour amber was achieved through dim-to-warm technology, an approach that enhances relaxation and eases more introspective meditative states. ESTUDIO DEDÓS did their best to prove light can support wellbeing and emotional comfort while harmonising natural and artificial light to enhance the overall sensory experience.
