The historic house on the banks of the river Rijn has been revived into a combination of a classical main house and a few additional spaces. The façade, dating back to the 1920s, is rich in details highlighted with Studio Modijefsky’s new design. The studio maximises the potential of the historic space by incorporating luxurious amenities such as a bar, wellness, and wine rooms into the design.

The entrance to the first floor was transformed from an incoherent, large hallway into a spine of the house with layered sightlines, which guide to the living areas. An atelier is nested in one of two serres facing the garden. Filled with bespoke furniture and abundant light, which comes from all angles, the atelier provides ideal conditions for work. The skylight illuminates the hallway staircase, designed as both an architectural element and the central focus point of the staircase.

The Living Room
The living area unfolds through textured glass doors. The seating area, furnished with soft fabric in earthy tones, is set next to the open fireplace. Wool upholstery, walnut wood, and natural stone flooring are paired with copper accents to create a tactile presence and cosy experience.

The living area features a customised wall with bespoke cabinetry and open shelving for added functionality. A reading and resting place next to the see-through fireplace consists of a custom-made sofa with detailed legs and integrated LED lights. The furniture adds tactile contrast and depth to the design. Rugs executed in a bright orange colour palette soften the tiled flooring beneath.

The dining area
The dining area connects the living room with the kitchen. Dark walnut table, the centrepiece of the room, introduces a new visual layer, while strongly contrasting with the other parts of the house. The back wall of the kitchen features integrated storage and bespoke elements. One of the large cabinets is equipped with textured glass that adds a layer of transparency and visual interest.

Stainless-steel countertop introduces an industrial touch while warm-toned wood cabinetry creates a homely, inviting feeling. A spacious kitchen island with an included breakfast nook is turned toward the garden, ensuring a pleasant start to the day.

The amenities
One extension of the house hosts a bar, a wellness area, and a multifunctional room. Warm brown tones in the bar are complemented with terrazzo details around a square-pattern wood floor. The geometric storage for bottles and glassware is executed in brass accents, while Zelige tiles in various colours combined with marble, terrazzo, textured glass, and wood create a diverse material palette.

Steam bath, jacuzzi, and sauna
Moving on to the wellness area, the visitors will encounter a travertine floor. A detailed backwall with engraved travertine leads the users to the covered jacuzzi. The area also offers a sauna and a steam bath for ultimate relaxation. The multifunctional room contains a mix of designer and bespoke pieces, such as sculptural lounge chairs and handcrafted side tables.

A fold-out bed is placed in a custom-built cabinet, while the round rug softens the terrazzo floor. Another extension across the garden houses a boathouse, wine room, and garage. The material palette is similar to the other parts of the space, while the vine room boasts a custom-designed cabinet and a high table for a comfortable wine experience.

The second floor
The staircase, naturally lit through the rooflight, leads visitors over a seamless poured floor into the rooms. A simpler colour and material palette offers a clean look for the bedroom. Custom bedheads with integrated lighting are complemented by built-in cabinetry for storage. The generously illuminated master bedroom features carefully selected furniture and rugs, as well as a large mirror and a bespoke wardrobe concealed behind the cabinetry. The light cohesive palette in the bathroom combines tiles, poured flooring, and travertine, creating an enjoyable environment.

Blending historic character with contemporary comfort, Studio Modijefsky shaped a timeless family home that celebrates craftsmanship and strengthens its connection to the surroundings.
