Rotterdam is home to a new kind of hotel experience that brings something new to the idea of sustainable travel. The Usual Rotterdam is not only an eco-conscious hotel, but a bold step towards regenerative hospitality, where every design choice supports the environment and the community.
Designed by JOI-Design IAD joehnk + partner mbB, with lead designer Stephanie Nosek at the helm, this hotel embodies a commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) values and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The designers envisioned conscious travel as a force for good, embracing regenerative hospitality that upholds sustainability and actively enhances the environment and society.
Thoughtful interiors with a green approach
From the moment you step inside, it’s clear that sustainability is at the core of the hotel’s identity. The interiors are a mix of natural materials, repurposed furniture, and clever design solutions that make the space functional and inviting. Biophilic greenery softens the modern architecture, while warm earth tones create a sense of comfort. The lobby is designed to be more than just a check-in space – it’s a communal hub where locals and travelers can connect.
Innovative features and upcycled elements
One of the standout features is The U Bar, where terrazzo tile offcuts are transformed into a striking mosaic-clad bar, and barstools are made from a blend of coffee shells and recycled plastic. In the Game Room, a giant ‘Connect Four’ game serves as entertainment and a room divider. Vintage flea-market finds add character, giving the hotel a lived-in feel while reducing waste.
Eco-friendly guest accommodations
Guest rooms are designed with the same thoughtful approach. The 209 accommodations are divided into three categories: compact Japanese-inspired ‘Pod’ rooms, ‘Cosy’ ensuite rooms with cork walls and mini terrariums, and spacious long-stay ‘Studios’ complete with kitchenettes. Every detail is considered for sustainability, from woodchip basins in bathrooms to LED lighting and FSC-certified timber furniture. Even the mattresses are designed with circularity in mind, ensuring they can be fully recycled at the end of their lifespan.
Commitment to renewable energy and local impact
Beyond its interiors, The Usual Rotterdam takes sustainability further by operating on 100% renewable energy from Dutch windmills. The rooftop is covered with greenery to promote urban biodiversity, while birdhouses and insect hotels contribute to the local ecosystem. Around 70% of the food and beverages served are vegan or vegetarian, sourced from nearby businesses to support the local economy and reduce transportation emissions.
Recognition for excellence in sustainable design
Achieving Green Key certification was just the beginning. The Usual is on track to receive a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ or ‘Outstanding’ ranking – one of the highest sustainability ratings for buildings in Europe. The hotel’s commitment to transparency means it will continuously measure its carbon footprint, finding ways to improve its environmental impact over time.
The meticulous research and dedication to sustainability have paid off in creating a forward-thinking hospitality experience and earning The Usual Rotterdam a prestigious LIV Hospitality Design Award for Interior Design in the Eco-Friendly category. This recognition underscores the hotel’s role as a pioneer in responsible travel and innovative design.
