The Cosmos lamp, winner of the LIT Lighting Design Awards in Artisan Glass Blown Lighting, transforms the scientific theory of the toroidal universe into a breathtaking lighting experience. Designed by Myrto Grigori of Noiro Studio, these handcrafted masterpieces evoke the enigmatic beauty of the universe while emphasizing sustainability and craftsmanship.
A universe captured in design
Inspired by the idea that the universe might be shaped like a torus – a donut-like structure with a central axis and swirling vortexes – Cosmos lamps embody the flow of energy and information hypothesized in this model. The lamps feature a toroidal glass structure, hand-blown by skilled NYC artisans, which allows light to swirl and interact with its form. This creates an ethereal play of illumination that mirrors the cyclical patterns of energy within the universe.
More than a lamp, Cosmos is a visual representation of universal cycles. Its design draws connections to natural rhythms, such as the changing seasons and life’s cyclical nature, inviting introspection and conversation in any space.
Sustainability meets artistry
Sustainability is at the heart of the Cosmos lamps. Locally sourced materials and artisanal techniques ensure a minimal environmental footprint. The glass is hand-blown in NYC, reducing transportation emissions and supporting local craftsmanship. The wooden bases, made from sustainably sourced hardwood, further emphasize Noiro Studio’s commitment to ethical design. Grigori herself also hand-assembled each lamp, underscoring a dedication to detail and minimizing industrial processes.
At its core, the lamp utilizes energy-efficient LED strips, providing a soft, warm glow and an eco-friendly lighting solution. The result is a product that adds beauty to spaces and reflects a commitment to reducing environmental impact.
