A Brilliant Fusion of Biomimicry and Lighting Design at the Freiburg Centre for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies

The livMatS Biomimetic Shell at the Freiburg Centre for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies is a unique example of how lighting design can elevate a building’s atmosphere while meeting technical demands. Recognized with a LIT Lighting Design Award in the Workplace Lighting Design category, this project was expertly crafted by Belzner Holmes Light Design, led by Thomas Hollubarsch, with support from Victoria Coval and Sarinya Jentsch. The challenge? To create lighting that blends ambient warmth with technical functionality in a building designed for sustainability.

At the heart of the design are wooden cassettes that vary in size, each requiring a unique lighting solution. The team mounted linear LED profiles along the inner sides of each cassette frame, providing a warm, indirect light that creates a welcoming atmosphere while ensuring efficient, functional lighting. With a color temperature of 3,000K, the light is soft yet effective, perfect for the research and workspaces within.

The real achievement of this lighting design lies in its integration with the building’s technical systems. With over 250 linear LED luminaires, a sophisticated controls and cabling concept was essential. A central control panel allows users to adjust the intensity of the light as needed while precise planning ensures smooth communication between all fixtures.

Sustainability is central to the livMatS Biomimetic Shell, and the lighting design aligns with this vision. A weather-responsive shading system allows natural light to flow through the building while minimizing the need for artificial lighting. The energy-efficient LED luminaires help reduce the building’s carbon footprint, while the indirect lighting promotes a healthy, comfortable work environment.
