Mezalians is a restaurant in Kolobrzeg designed by 370 studio, known for comprehensive interior designs enriched with strong visual identity. This is the third project the studio designed for the same client, following the designs of Mamma and Fuego restaurants located in the same Polish city. Based on the union of opposites, the restaurant incorporates seemingly incompatible elements into a cohesive, elegant design.
Mésalliances: a concept that unites the opposites
Mezalians interior design concept by 370 Studio relies on the French concept of Mésalliances, which describes the union of opposites. Mésalliances bring together socially unacceptable relationships, bringing public uproar and scandal. But even in mésalliances, love triumphs over all divisions. The main interior design task was to reimagine the interior of a previously operating space both in terms of a new identity and the atmosphere it creates.
Iconic Polish design enriched with unexpected details
370 studio played with contrast, culling deeply from the idea of mésalliances. The contemporary forms and bold stylistic details were paired with Polish design icons of the 1950s and 60s to complement the restaurant’s Polish menu. Inspired by the restaurant’s name but refusing to interpret it literally, the studio added numerous original and eye-catching elements to the 50s- and 60s-inspired design to create a cosy and consistent dining experience.
Refined beige colour palette
The colour palette is dominated by beiges, paired with burgundy and pink hues appearing both on the walls and furniture pieces. The bar overlooking the entrance represents the heart of the venue. The bar area is equipped with a tall, conspicuous shelving unit that displays numerous bottles of vodka, along with a large table symbolising Polish hospitality.
LED lamps, pink unicorns and sculpture by Oskar Zeita
An irregular LED lamp with an arched shape resides above the bar near the entrance. A large pink unicorn floating from the ceiling adds a touch of surrealism to the design, alongside an inverted room furnished with a carpet, a lamp and horse-shaped kids’ stools positioned on the wall of the bar. The surreal character of the interior is complemented by an attention-grabbing accent of modern Polish design: blown metal sculptures by Oskar Zieta, an award-winning designer and artist. The spirit of Mezalians is aligned with the menu of the restaurant, where bold, unexpected combinations of flavours create a unified sensory experience.
Although based on the ideas of the opposite Studio 370 managed to create a coherent yet surprising venue. Mezalians’ interior design, made in the spirit of collaborative partnership, showcased that contrasting elements, if thoughtfully executed, can not only embellish a venue but additionally create a strong emotional bond with its visitors. The unexpected, surreal design of Mezalians has won the LIV Hospitality Design Award in the Interior Design Restaurant – Theme category.
