Manhattan, a new lamp by Kogl Design Studio, is inspired by the verticality of the Big Apple. Measuring 120 × 140 × 1200 mm, the lamp resembles an illuminated column, commanding a presence in the space much like a large skyscraper within the city’s urban landscape. The lamp merges architectural precision with atmospheric quality, residing at the intersection of furniture, lighting and a sculptural object.

Aluminium frame, ribbed glass core
The luminaire is supported by a slender aluminium frame with a closed luminous core made of ribbed glass. The expression derived from the lamp’s restrained geometry provides an architectural feel, turning the lamp into a building-like structure.

The selection of warm light is there to add a softer, more human character to the lamp. Through the thoughtful pairing of a cold, strict exterior with the soft and warm lighting, the designers managed to produce a balance between industrial and homely, monumental and intimate.

The glass luminaire introduces texture, depth and greater tactility to the light. By passing through the vertical ribbing, the light emits a soft and even glow that changes character depending on the perspective of the viewer and their surroundings. The shifting character of the light provides the lamp with an artistic quality.

Circular reuse
The selection of aluminium and glass for the material palette is both deliberate and expressive. The materials help define Manhattan’s architectural identity while also supporting recyclability and circular reuse. Both can be recycled and repurposed, contributing to the circular economy.

Lamp and an artistic installation
Although designed as a functional floor lamp, Manhattan can also serve as an objet d’art or a part of a light installation. Made in collaboration with Philips Hue smart lighting company, the integrated lighting system allows for dynamic light sequences. This smart visual effect transforms the appearance of the lamp and its character. These effects are enhanced by the ribbed glass, which serves as a canvas where light “paints” a work of art by filtering and distributing illumination.

Kogl Design Studio
Founded in Oslo in 2025, Kogl Design Studio uses material exploration and structural refinement to create lighting and furniture pieces. The duo, composed of Christian Sandbye and Jonas Oppedal, explore how shape and function are influenced by material choices. The latest lamp by Kogl Design Studio represents the continuation of that approach.
Led by material awareness and architectural precision, the lamp is developed with serial production in mind. Dedicated to creating items that endure both visually and physically, the lamp combines a bold visual language with lasting relevance.

Manhattan by Kogl Design Studio was first presented at 3daysofdesign 2026. One of the largest design festivals in Europe had the honour of debuting the lamp between June 10 and 12, 2026, in Copenhagen.
