Messler Gallery Exhibits YAMAGIWA’s Jakobsson Lamp as a Contemporary Wooden Classic

Jakobsson Lamp, concived by Swedish designer Hans-Agne Jakobsson, has become a part of the Everyday Heirlooms: Exquisitely Designed Wooden Objects of Use exhibition in Maine, USA. A group showing of usable wooden pieces presents a wide range of artworks. Curated by Annie Quigley, Editor-in-Chief of Remodelista.com, and Heide Martin, head of a namesake Design Studio in Rockland, the show presents useful wood products that combine quality, functionality, and design, as an antithesis to cheap materials frequently used in current furniture design.

The subtle appeal of the Jakobsson lamp

One of Jakobsson’s pivotal artworks, this small table lamp is composed of thinly sliced pieces of pine wood. Naturally dried over time, the material mimics the softness and warmth of an outdoor campfire. Designed in the 1950s, the 13.5″ x 10.25″ lamp is mounted on a stand of the same material, providing a visually rich texture and a uniform organic look. The favorite of many Scandinavian homes, the piece has been assembled by the YAMAGIWA’s group of traditional artisans, that combine art with aesthetics under the motto The Art of Lighting.

Specializing in producing original collections, a prominent light manufacturer from Japan has created quality lighting fixtures for over a century. Founded in 1923, the company uses traditional methods and skills to bring designs to life. Their impressive portfolio of works includes pendant lights, wall lights, floor and table lamps made in collaboration with some of the world’s finest designers, such as Toyo Ito and Tokujin Yoshioka.

Apart from the Jakobsson lamp, the Everyday Heirlooms exhibition gathers over 20 wood objects, including combs, baskets, mirrors, chairs, and even a wooden chessboard with figures designed by American artist Man Ray, and produced by Design Within Reach. Other standout pieces on view include Strap Carved Vessel, (2025) by Aspen Golann, Eames Molded Plywood Folding Screen, (designed 1946), by Charles & Ray Eames, Cane, (1989) by Frank E. Cummings III, and Aalto Tea Trolley 901, (designed 1936) by Aino & Alvar Aalto. With such a vast selection of wood objects, the presentation aims to underscore the practicality and timelessness of well-designed wooden pieces.
