Hemisphere is a hanging planter made of solid wood designed to create the impression that both the wood and plants are floating in the air. Inspired by the idea of sky gardens, the team from NECKTIE wanted to minimise the visibility of its support system: thin polyethylene fishing lines and compact fittings keep the planter suspended while remaining as unobtrusive as possible.
To address the difficulty of watering common hanging planters, which often require removing the inner pot and risk damaging the plant in the process, Hemisphere uses a two-part structure joined by bolts. The top and bottom halves of the planter stay assembled during display, but the lower portion can be detached easily to allow water to drain without disturbing the plant.
The planter is carved from solid white ash, a dense and durable hardwood often used in furniture and musical instruments. The wood is first immersed in a liquid resin treatment, allowing the resin to penetrate the grain and improve water resistance. After drying, the surface is sealed with multiple layers of coating to create a durable finish that can withstand moisture over time.
The wire used to suspend the product is made from water-resistant polyethylene line, which was specifically selected for its thin profile and strength. The area where these lines attach to the planter was adapted from accessory hardware, chosen for their small size. It is important to note that the end of the wire is looped, and no hooks are included.
All parts are fabricated in Japan by a domestic woodworking manufacturer. Each piece is finished by hand to ensure the material’s natural grain remains intact throughout the production process.
