The City Crossing·Runfu project by Dejoy International Architects (DIA) recently won the prestigious BLT Built Design Award for Jury’s Favorite in Interior Design – Commercial, a well-deserved accolade for a space that blends heritage and modernity.

This ambitious project, led by Jian Zhang and Junbing Shao, alongside a talented design team including Sihao Xie, Jiahao Xu, Han Xing, and Piru Chen, spans three levels and integrates various functions – from exhibition and entertainment to hospitality and recreation. It encapsulates the essence of Shanghai’s “Haipai” culture, where diverse elements converge harmoniously.

An architectural journey through Haipai culture

City Crossing·Runfu’s design draws inspiration from Shanghai’s iconic spirit of “embracing all rivers,” reflecting the city’s rich cultural mosaic. The project’s interiors resonate with a luxurious elegance rooted in vintage aesthetics yet restrained by modern sensibilities. The reception desk, styled as a gracious gentleman, sets the tone for the space, where metal grilles and gold foil silk wall coverings create an immediate sense of grandeur.

The black wrought iron staircase stands as a visual and experiential highlight. This spiral ascent, paired with patterned stone flooring, is a metaphorical and literal journey through time and style. Every turn, pause, and step offers guests a fresh perspective, transforming the staircase into a sculptural, cinematic experience.

Lighting: The poetry of space

Lighting plays a pivotal role in shaping the project’s atmosphere. The interplay of light and shadow, combined with shifting visual focal points, crafts a narrative-rich ambiance. Red velvet drapes, paired with vintage-style shutters, infuse the space with an elegant tension, blending softness and rigidity. This sophisticated lighting design adds emotional depth and character, guiding guests seamlessly through each area.

Multi-level sophistication and functionality

Each of the three levels within City Crossing·Runfu offers distinct experiences while maintaining a cohesive design language. The second floor introduces a platform overlooking the double-height reception area, providing dynamic vantage points and interweaving spatial elements. A small curved balcony highlights the dance between solid and void, evoking a sense of historical grandeur.

The approximately 1,500-square-meter B1 level is a sanctuary of leisure and versatility. Designed as a communal clubhouse for future residents, this space offers wine tasting, tea brewing, flower viewing, swimming, and fitness activities. Natural light enhances the serene environment, reflecting off the pool’s ceiling and textured walls, creating a tranquil yet invigorating atmosphere.

Transforming constraints into features

Structural elements, such as original load-bearing columns, have been reimagined into flowing archways, adding rhythm and sequence to the pool area. These arcades establish a sense of continuity while inviting relaxation, encapsulating the architectural ingenuity of the project. Handcrafted rattan hanging chairs and soft lighting further enrich the space, adding layers of comfort and elegance.
