Completed in August 2023, this ambitious project transformed the Greatroom into a vibrant reception area, business hub, lobby lounge, and wine cellar, earning the prestigious Winner in Interior Design Europe accolade at the LIV Hospitality Design Awards.

The redesign was led by Stockholm-based Living Design of Sweden, with Tarek Hegazy serving as Lead and Interior Designer. In collaboration with BRUMANN, the project team combined their expertise to create a space that balances aesthetic brilliance with sustainability, functionality, and the unique cultural identity of Munich.

Inspired by Munich’s essence

The design draws heavily from Munich’s rich tapestry of natural and urban influences, including the serene beauty of the English Garden, the vibrant Schwabing district, and the intricate details of Jugendstil architecture. This inspiration manifests in a calming color palette of light grey, beige, and soft blue, punctuated by royal blue, tan, and green accents. Materials like brass, faux leather, engineered stone, and wood were meticulously chosen, reflecting a commitment to sustainability while achieving a timeless elegance.

A multifunctional masterpiece

The Greatroom is no ordinary lobby. It’s a dynamic, open-plan space designed to serve multiple purposes. High ceilings create a sense of grandeur, while thoughtful zoning ensures that each function, whether welcoming guests at the reception desk, hosting informal business meetings, or serving wine from the cellar, feels distinct yet connected.

One of the standout features is the staircase, which was reimagined as a cozy hideaway above the bar. This intimate space doubles as a unique shelving system, blending functionality with creative design. This harmonious integration of elements showcases the design team’s innovative approach, ensuring that the Greatroom remains practical and visually stunning.

Craftsmanship meets sustainability

BRUMANN, the general contractor for interior fit-out and furnishing, was crucial in optimizing the project. Their expertise ensured that structural requirements, sustainability goals, and cost-effectiveness were seamlessly addressed. Functional adjustments in areas like the reception and bar and material upgrades were implemented to enhance durability and align with the design vision.

The successful transformation of the Greatroom underscores the power of collaboration. By bringing together Living Design’s innovative vision and BRUMANN’s precision execution, the project exemplifies a harmonious blend of form, function, and cultural resonance.

As a crowning achievement, the new Greatroom elevates the guest experience and sets a benchmark for hospitality design. Its seamless integration of Munich’s heritage with Marriott’s global sophistication ensures it will be a beloved space for years to come.
