A multicultural haven in Athens has been recognized for its captivating design. The Alpameda Apartment, envisioned by Natalia Bazaiou Architecture and Research, recently received an Honorable Mention in Interior Design / Renovation at the BLT Built Design Awards.
This project transformed a private residence into a vibrant tapestry reflecting the homeowner’s European and Asian heritage. The focus of the renovation was on the main entryway, kitchen, and two bathrooms. Here, light plays a starring role, while a playful dialogue unfolds between textures and materials.
The kitchen emerges as a symphony of materiality. Two opposing walls are adorned with ceramic tiles, creating a signature feature visible from every key area of the apartment. Textured and light-catching, these walls infuse the space with a sense of tranquillity, openness, and joy.
This captivating interplay of materials continues in the bathrooms. The main bathroom embraces a cool elegance with concrete finishes and metallic accents, fostering an inviting intimacy. In contrast, the smaller bathroom geared towards the family’s teenagers exudes a dose of youthful rebellion, channelling a cheeky punk-rock vibe.
The transformation extends to the entrance, where a handcrafted airy bookcase takes centre stage. Its size and transparent simplicity create a captivating play on scale and rhythm, immediately shaping the visitor’s perception of the space.
The Alpameda Apartment exemplifies the power of design to celebrate cultural diversity. Through a thoughtful fusion of materials, textures, and light, Natalia Bazaiou Architecture and Research, with lighting by LUUN and construction by Ktiriaki Anagennisi & Thanassis Fotou, has crafted a space that is both playful and sophisticated, a true reflection of the multicultural family that calls it home.
