Taking inspiration from Japanese origami, human anatomy, and the ever-evolving light play on trees, Alex Lesniowski set out to transform flat sheet metal into an animated organic form. The table’s biomorphic legs, crafted from stainless steel, corten steel, mild steel, and bronze, are a marvel of design and engineering. Each component, laser-cut to minimize waste, interlocks and branches out, creating a self-supporting structure that resembles the intricate network of veins and branches found in nature.
The table’s dynamism doesn’t stop at its form. The legs, slightly slanted backwards and tilted sideways, evoke a sense of movement, further accentuated by the interplay of light and shadow throughout the day. This play of light is further enhanced by the glass top, secured with locking brass balls that not only add a touch of elegance but also allow for height and levelling adjustments.
Lesniowski’s commitment to sustainability is evident in his design choices. The nested laser-cutting process minimizes material waste, and the table’s ability to be disassembled and stacked allows for efficient transportation, reducing its carbon footprint. This thoughtful approach to design reflects Lesniowski’s dedication to guiding his students to not only unleash their creativity but also be mindful of the environmental impact of their creations.
