VELLO VIA+ Electric Bike Design Creates a More Practical Future for City Cycling

Folding bicycles have long faced a classic trade-off: you either get a bike that folds down small, or you get a bike that actually feels good to ride. For years, the hinges required to make a bicycle collapsible have compromised frame rigidity, leading to a flexing, unstable sensation on the road.

The Viennese bicycle manufacturer VELLO has spent years challenging this compromise, and their latest release, the VIA+ range, marks a significant shift in how we look at compact bicycle architecture. By pairing their signature frame layout with a brand-new hub motor from Bosch, the company has managed to create an electric folding bike that behaves like a full-sized machine.

Rethinking the folding frame geometry

The core of the VIA+ design lies in its patented diamond frame. Unlike almost every other folding bicycle on the market, VELLO has completely removed the traditional folding hinge from the main frame. Instead, the frame relies on a clever rear triangle pivot and a magnetic retention system. This choice preserves the structural integrity of the main tubes, allowing the bike to feel stiff, direct, and stable when you accelerate or turn sharply.

To achieve this balance of strength and weight, the engineers selected double-butted Columbus Chrome-Moly steel tubing. While many modern manufacturers default to aluminium or carbon, steel provides a naturally dampening ride quality that absorbs harsh city cobblestones. The choice of material and geometry is robust enough that the VIA+ is the only folding bike on the market to carry an official mountain bike certification, meaning it is just as capable on light weekend gravel paths as it is on smooth urban tarmac.

Discreet integration of the Bosch HubLine

The real technical talking point of the VIA+ is the integration of the new Bosch HubLine drive system. Instead of using a bulky mid-drive motor that disrupts the clean lines of the bottom bracket, this system sits neatly within the rear wheel hub. Delivering up to 45 Nm of torque and a peak power of 400 W, the motor provides an assist that feels entirely natural, largely thanks to an intelligent internal incline sensor that automatically adjusts power delivery based on the slope of the road.

By shifting the propulsion to the rear hub, the design keeps the bike’s centre of gravity low and predictable. The battery system is equally tidy: a compact, removable unit sits securely within the frame, with the option to attach a second battery to bring the total capacity up to 500 Wh. This means riders can cover significant distances without carrying a bike that looks like an industrial appliance.

Tailored for clean lines and practical utility

VELLO offers the VIA+ in two distinct configurations, each catering to different design priorities and riding needs. The VIA+ Urban model is built for the minimalist commuter who wants a clean, oil-free machine; it pairs a Gates Carbon Drive belt system with a UTgear two-speed internal gear hub, keeping maintenance to an absolute minimum. For those who face steeper hills or prefer traditional mechanical feedback, the VIA+ Tour features a precise Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain.

Beyond the drivetrain, the attention to detail is evident in the components that come standard on both models. Rather than relying on cheap add-ons, the bike features fully integrated Supernova lighting that runs off the main battery and meets strict road regulations. Stopping power is handled by dependable hydraulic Shimano disc brakes, ensuring safety in wet weather. Even the handlebars feature built-in USB-C charging, allowing riders to power their smartphones directly from the bike’s battery while using the Bosch navigation app.

A step forward for city transport

The true success of the VELLO VIA+ is that it does not look or feel like a vehicle made of compromises. By keeping the main frame free of hinges and choosing high-grade steel over cheap alloys, VELLO has created a piece of urban transport that values longevity and ride quality just as much as portability. It shows that utility objects can be stripped down to their essentials without losing their character or performance. As cities continue to reorganise themselves around two-wheeled transit, designs like this show that a folding bicycle can be a joy to ride every day, rather than just a space-saving backup plan.
