Cologne is preparing to reclaim its status as a premier global design hub. Launching in autumn 2026, from 26 to 31 October 2026, Design Season Cologne marks the start of an ambitious new movement in the German creative landscape. Conceived as a decentralised, city-wide celebration, the festival brings together designers, studios, brands, and creative enterprises for six days of immersive showcases embedded directly into the fabric of the city.
The international design landscape is undergoing a clear transformation. Standard trade fair formats are experiencing growing pressure to evolve as brands, studios, and visitors seek open, urban, and experience-focused settings. Boundaries between furniture design, architecture, hospitality, retail, culture, and public space continue to soften. Design Season Cologne steps into this shift as a curated alternative that prioritises quality over sheer size. Every concept, presentation, and exhibition is developed and reviewed alongside an expert curatorial team, ensuring that attendees encounter meaningful, professional design installations rather than routine product displays.

Design Season Cologne marks the beginning of a new chapter
Cologne’s connection to design runs deep. In 1949, amidst post-war reconstruction, the city hosted its first furniture fair, growing over subsequent decades into a primary meeting point for European manufacturers, architects, media, and buyers. Yet the city’s design culture has frequently extended beyond conventional exhibition halls. During the late 1960s, the famous VISIONA exhibitions transformed an altered Rhine passenger ship into a floating showcase for futuristic interior concepts. Decades later, the decentralised Passagen festival took design into city neighbourhoods, proving that spatial design thrives when it activates real urban spaces.
Design Season Cologne builds on this tradition of urban engagement. Rather than dwelling on past formats, the festival acts as a forward-looking launchpad designed to place Cologne back on the international design map. Initiated by designer Robin Hapelt and organised by Thomas Fasshauer alongside the Chicos Event agency, the festival aims to build a permanent, annual platform for design presentation across Germany.
“Cologne will become the meeting point of the European design scene in October 2026. The cooperation with Design Season Cologne emphasises the urban orientation of idd cologne and creates more visibility for interior design in the city. Showrooms and store partners are an important component of our event concept. The joint presence in the city and at the trade fair creates additional reach, synergies and real added value for all participants.”

Connecting the city, trade fairs, and industry
A defining aspect of the festival is its emphasis on collaboration over competition. Design Season Cologne has formed a strategic alliance with Koelnmesse’s interior design days cologne (idd). Running parallel to ORGATEC, the major trade event for workspace environments, this joint initiative establishes a comprehensive, city-wide Interiors Week.
Where ORGATEC concentrates on contract and workspace design, idd cologne focuses on premium residential interiors. Design Season Cologne expands this landscape further by introducing broader design disciplines, product innovations, and experimental spatial concepts. By linking trade fair halls with urban showrooms, historic sites, and temporary pop-ups, the festival establishes a direct bridge between international trade delegates, local creatives, and design enthusiasts.
Exhibitions and activations are set to span diverse locations across the city. Major design houses like LAUFEN are taking the opportunity to open new permanent spaces, such as their showroom in the Rheinauhafen district. Established venues like the Design Post Köln will feature major international labels including MDF Italia, Prostoria, Lodes, Secto Design, and KASCHKASCH. Meanwhile, standalone highlights from Polestar, Occhio, and Queer Design by Rodrigo Vairinhos will further diversify the city-wide itinerary.

Locations and programme
Designers Tower (Schloss Weißhaus)
Set within the historic moated castle in the Sülz district, this venue forms the core of a dedicated design district and houses three main curated exhibitions:
- Cologne Calling: A showcase featuring more than 30 designs by local Cologne-based creatives.
- Design State NRW: A platform spotlighting emerging talent from across North Rhine-Westphalia.
- Furniture Design Dialogue: A nationwide exhibition exploring sustainability, material cycles, and social change.

Machwerkhaus Köln (Machwerkschau)
Located in the industrial district of Kalk, this former manufacturing hub opens over 2,000 square metres of active workshops, halls, and ateliers to the public. Local craftspeople, design studios, planning firms, and circular economy enterprises present work alongside external exhibitors in the actual spaces where items are designed and made.
Staged in a 1,500-square-metre space alongside ORGATEC, this project centres on circular design practices and adaptive reuse. The showcase features work and panel discussions from leading brands such as Andreu World, Mogu, Knepper, and Occhio.

Design Season Cologne provides a clear outline for how cities can rethink design presentation. By connecting trade expertise with local urban culture, the event sets out to make Cologne a permanent, forward-thinking focal point on the global design calendar.
