This holiday season, the V&A South Kensington has outdone itself with its annual Christmas installation, revealing All Lit Up! by the renowned artist and designer Anna Lomax. On display at the museum’s Cromwell Road Entrance from Monday, 25 November 2024, to Sunday, 5 January 2025, this unique creation reimagines the traditional Christmas tree with a bold, LED-lit design that merges playfulness with elegance.

Standing as a vibrant, twisting column of light, Lomax’s installation draws inspiration from the museum’s iconic entrance columns, symbolizing strength, life, and growth. By unifying the natural beauty of a tree with the architectural power of a column, All Lit Up! embodies the joyous and whimsical essence of Christmas.

A designer’s tribute to tradition and innovation

Anna Lomax, known for her pop-culture-inspired works and playful use of unexpected materials, draws inspiration from the museum’s heritage. The installation pays homage to the V&A’s Grand Entrance columns and the historical influence of Prince Albert, who popularized Christmas trees in Britain.

“It’s an honour to design the 2025 V&A Christmas Tree,” Lomax shared. “My design gives the iconic V&A columns a playful twist, embodying the Christmas spirit through a spectacle of light.”

The result is a site-specific work that animates the space, evoking childlike wonder while offering a modern perspective on traditional holiday decor.

A V&A Christmas tradition

The V&A commissions a designer each year to bring a fresh take on the Christmas tree tradition. Previous installations have been created by celebrated names such as Alexander McQueen, Jasper Conran, and Es Devlin. Thanks to the museum’s Contemporary Programme team, this year’s piece continues the tradition of merging art, design, and festive spirit.

Meneesha Kellay, Senior Curator, Contemporary, expressed her enthusiasm:

“Lighting up and lifting spirits this festive season, we are thrilled to commission Anna Lomax. Her playful response to the V&A’s iconic architecture perfectly captures the joy of Christmas.”
