Austrian architect Valentin Ceconi painted the canvas of Salzburg’s historic Andräviertel district, adding two townhouses to the already picturesque landscape. THE STUDIO, the recently renovated vision of the late architect, was created with the utmost respect for History and the building itself. The result, offering a holistic living atmosphere, was achieved through thoughtful transformative architecture.
Built in the 1900s, THE STUDIO is a model of the grandeur of the Gründerzeit era and is reminiscent of the illustrious Ringstrasse architecture. Such an elegant example of the passing of time has received a new chapter: rejuvenation. The original building was turned into a contemporary loft by merging the two apartments or 12 individual rooms, all sustainably done and with great sensitivity.
Fundamental changes to the building’s statics were essential, with load-bearing walls being carefully undercut. More than a renovation, it was a rebirth into our contemporary era. The apartment was completely gutted and reimagined from the ground up to meet the highest standards of structural engineering.
When entering THE STUDIO, one is immediately enveloped in the 270 square meters of space that, in the 18 months of the renovation process, was carefully brought to this century. The rooms were updated in terms of thermal, acoustic, electrical, and fire protection systems. Yet, even with all these modern enhancements, the essence of the building’s historic character still lives in the elegance of the result.
As one walks through the spaces of THE STUDIO, the blend of old and new is palpable. The basement was connected to the mezzanine by a complex ceiling opening – not only is it a bold design statement, but is also food for thought.
The team behind this remarkable transformation, led by Marcel Eberharter, followed the motto “Design Dreams in Perfection”. The team developed room concepts in contemporary shapes and lines, using a clear design language with multinational influences. Austrian craftsmanship and attention to detail are lived here.
THE STUDIO, in its essence, is like a relationship between heritage and modern design. The completed structure shows how contemporary energy can be brought into buildings with deep historic roots: its architectural evolution.
