Resonance, a luminous large-scale installation by Fung+Bedford, will be unveiled at Clerkenwell Design Week. The amazing twisted origami-inspired artwork will be suspended in the nave of St Bartholomew the Great, one of the oldest and most atmospheric churches in England.

Hand-crafted origami-inspired sculpture
Resonance, a four-meter-long installation, was created from four illuminated twisted paper sculptures. Created from a single sheet of paper, the sculpture speaks in the language of origami. The installation explores emergence and how unique patterns can emerge from complex systems. Although individually they can appear unfulfilling, the synergy of all four statues creates a visual experience much bigger than the simple sum of its parts.

Memories absorbed in paper
The handmade statue is made of hand-folded aluminium, Tyvek, LED lighting, and architectural fixing. The lighting systems that provide illumination ensure structural support as well, thus solving a potential problem of sagging. Suspended with St Bartholomew the Great‘s stone volume, the installation absorbs the memories of music, sound, history, and emotion integrated into the church walls. The light that travels through the folds brings the artwork to life, absorbing the memory and vibration and encouraging contemplation, quietude, and introspection.

Site-specific artwork
With its stillness and solemnity, St Bartholomew the Great completes the design of the installation. Made of stone, the church brings a contemplative, almost zen-like atmosphere, allowing visitors to engage in self-inspection and feel the passage of time. Central to the Resonance, the sound waves of the church are translated into repetitive folding and sculptural gestures. By unfolding moments of serenity through mindful repetition and rhythm, the sculpture activates the space without disrupting its peacefulness.

Tyvek and metal installations by Fung+Bedford
More than an art piece, Resonance also marks a symbolic return for the duo that created it. Angela Fung and Ashley Bedford have returned to Clerkenwell, the place where they opened their first studio. During London Jewellery Week, former award-winning jewellers discovered Tyvek, a material that has been life-altering for the duo and has become the pivot of their practice later on. In a window installation competition, Angela Fung used Tyvek to reinterpret the origami technique and create the base for their future work. Known for its emotive resonance, Angela Fung and Ashley Bedford’s unique Tyvek and metal installations mix the architectural techniques with the precision of origami craft.

Clerkenwell Design Week (May 19-26)
Resonance will be just one of several installations on view during Clerkenwell Design Week. Taking place between May 19 and May 26, one of the largest design events in England will mark its 15th anniversary in 2026. Apart from Resonance, Fung+Bedford will also present their CONFLUENCE installation that will be suspended from the ceiling of the Church of Design. Other installations on view during Clerkenwell Design Week include The Crinkle-Crankle Bench by StudioFolk and The Fountain of Technicolour Beads by One Bite Design.
