On the private shores of Jumby Bay Island in Antigua sits the Ty Compton Estate, a residence so expansive and detailed that it functions more like a personal resort. For the owners, this was exactly the point. They approached Studio IDC with a vision for an eight-bedroom, 23,000-square-foot family compound built for connection, sports, and entertaining on a grand scale. The design team, led by Studio IDC’s Todd Tyler and Stephanie Tyler, took on the challenge of creating a world-class retreat that feels both impressive and genuinely comfortable.
Designing for togetherness
The core task given to the designers was to create a space that could welcome large gatherings while still offering quiet corners for relaxation. The clients requested dining arrangements for at least 16 people and numerous areas where groups could gather. The architectural plan, developed by Andrew Goodenough, provided a sprawling canvas. Studio IDC then carefully organized the interiors to create spaces that feel personal and intimate, even when the house is full. The result is a home where a family can feel connected, but guests have their own unique experiences, much like at an all-inclusive destination.
A palette pulled from paradise
The interior design story begins with the island itself. The team established a neutral and textured background throughout the home. This layered foundation of natural materials and textiles allows the vibrant colors of the Antiguan landscape, seen through every window, to pop. The color choices for accents are crisp and clean, directly reflecting the blues of the ocean and the greens of the tropical foliage. There is a collected nautical quality to the home, brought to life through a careful selection of vintage, antique, and new artworks and furnishings that give the estate a unique and artistic personality.
Spaces with personality
Each area within the estate offers a distinct experience. The great room makes a powerful first impression with its breathtaking vaulted ceiling, which adds a sense of grandeur and drama to the home’s main social hub. The room features custom-designed area rugs, sconces, lamps, and seating arrangements that invite guests to settle in. This central space opens onto two separate terraces; one facing the ocean and the other looking over the pool, where a custom teak table can seat 20 for outdoor dining.
The accommodations are spread across the property to give everyone a sense of privacy. The estate includes two distinct master suites, three private cottages each containing two bedrooms, and a separate pool house. Every bedroom comes with its own luxury ensuite bathroom, complete with alfresco soaking tubs and open-air showers, constantly pulling the experience of nature into the daily routine.
A place of acclaim
The Ty Compton Estate is a complete world unto itself, complete with a private gym, a golf simulator, and even its own vegetable and herb garden that services the property’s kitchen. It is a direct response to the client’s love of family and their desire for a home that could hold everyone and everything they love.
This beautifully executed project did not go unnoticed. For their exceptional work, Studio IDC received the BLT Built Design Award for Residential Interior Design, a global recognition of their achievement in creating this Caribbean haven.
