IKEA is back at Milan Design Week, and this year they’re bringing the party! Their exhibition, titled “1st,” takes place from April 15th to 21st at Padiglione Visconti and promises a celebration of all things “first” – from moving out on your own to exploring new design possibilities.
The 1244-square-meter venue, which attracted over 77,000 visitors last year, will be transformed into an interactive IKEA playground designed by longtime collaborators, architect Midori Hasuike and spatial designer Emerzon. Expect a space that reflects the contrasting yet relatable experiences of venturing out for the first time.
Daytime at the IKEA venue offers a shoppable haven. Limited-edition merchandise and specially curated design magazines will be available, including “Catalogue!!!,” a unique zine created by DAZED and IKEA. Inspired by early 2000s IKEA imagery, this zine explores the concept of object permanence and the relationship young people have with their belongings.
Feeling weary from exploring the fair? The IKEA space has you covered. The Mezzanine features dreamy room sets perfect for a power nap, while the on-site restaurant serves delicious and affordable food and drinks, including a special “Hotdog Extravaganza” celebrating the event theme.
After dark, the venue morphs into a music lover’s paradise. From Hip-Hop to Disco, Funk to Techno, the music program – curated in collaboration with Italian music crews like Burro Studio, Akeem, Ciao Discoteca Italiana, Threes Production, and Slipmode – promises a vibrant mix that reflects Milan’s rich music scene.
Get ready for exciting product reveals! Following the infamous (and inflatable) furniture flop, IKEA will introduce the BRÄNNBOLL gaming collection, featuring their first-ever successful inflatable chair. This collection also boasts multifunctional furniture, smart storage solutions, and accessories designed for the ever-evolving needs of home gamers.
Design enthusiasts won’t want to miss the latest additions to the Nytillverkad collection. Originally developed by Japanese designer Noboru Nakamura, these iconic IKEA products have been updated for the future. The “1st” exhibition pays homage to Nakamura’s vision while showcasing how his timeless designs have been reimagined for contemporary living.
Throughout the week, young creators and collaborators will breathe life into the “1st” theme. Students from Istituto Marangoni Milano will present their design responses to the question “How do you imagine your first home?” on Wednesday, April 17th. Additionally, Japanese breakdancer Soraki, Italian music artists Chiamamifaro, and rising star Rea (whose debut album is inspired by her own “firsts”) will add their unique interpretations to the event.
IKEA’s presence goes beyond Padiglione Visconti. IKEA Italy is supporting The Glitch Camp by IED (Istituto Europeo di Design), an initiative offering young students a free urban camping experience during Milan Design Week. IKEA will provide “perfect sleep kits” for each tent, combining their home living expertise with affordable and functional products. Following the camp’s closure, these kits will be donated to Milan community projects.
Whether you’re a design aficionado, a music lover, or simply seeking a playful and interactive experience, IKEA’s “1st” exhibition promises to be a highlight of Milan Design Week 2024.
