Mondrian Hong Kong is a hotel designed by firm bykk, with Karin Krautgartner as lead designer, that was inspired by people and their stories. In the end, the team of designers was able to capture the people’s energies and Hong Kong’s essence within the opulent hotel. The Mondrian blends the old with the new, reflecting the dynamic life of Hong Kong.
As you enter, a stunning baroque-looking two-story mosaic fresco depicting underwater dancers in their floating dresses greets you. This over-the-top entrance is not just a welcome to guests but an invitation to passersby to step into the whimsical world of Mondrian. The hotel, with its distinctive triangular windows, became the go-to spot to take in the breathtaking views of the city and its famous harbour.
Inside, every detail pays homage to Hong Kong. The panelled walls and a lacquered sewing box filled with minibar snacks bring the city’s internationally-known tailors into the conversation. Lamp shades scattered here and there were designed to mimic the fan sails of traditional junk boats. To complement the lamps, sea creature motifs fill the corridors, reminding guests of the city’s fishing village heritage. The pink mirrored elevators are a playful touch, inspired by the popular local board game, Tangram.
Art is a crucial part of Mondrian Hong Kong. The hotel features curated works from both local and international artists that celebrate the hotel’s local roots while bringing in global perspectives. This thoughtful touch ensures that every stay at Mondrian Hong Kong is unique and that guests are constantly reminded of the rich history of the city they are in.
