Dark, Moody, and Unapologetically Sophisticated Apartment in Munich

“Van B Editions” is an initiative created between AD’s editorial team and the project developers of Bauwerk, where ten leading interior design firms were invited to create unique concepts for several apartments in a residential building designed by Ben Van Berkel. Among the entries is a 168-square-meter penthouse designed by Holzrausch, which, due to its rich aesthetic, was recognized by the BLT Awards as a space worth knowing.

The winning penthouse was designed and fully furnished by Holzrausch, who organized the apartment into distinct zones, with dark wood wall paneling serving as both a unifying element and a means of separation. This paneling covers the living area and open kitchen in the public zone while demarcating the private spaces, which include the master suite with its open bathroom and a study.

Material contrasts were central in the design, with the designers attempting to balance the rough with the exquisite through each element chosen for the space. Patinated brass is juxtaposed against natural stone, plaster contrasts with wood, and textured finishes play with smoother surfaces, creating a rich and comfortable environment for future penthouse residents.

Almost all furniture and lighting were custom-made, especially for this project, and the result is a cohesive interior design where materials and ambiance have as much importance as functionality, which was not forgotten in the design. As said above, this project earned recognition in the BLT Built Design Awards, receiving a mention in the “Apartment” category.
