The XI. Zagreb Design Week (ZGDW) is set to captivate design enthusiasts from September 26 to October 1, 2024, with a transformative showcase that underscores its commitment to innovation and inclusivity. This year’s festival will unfold in the evocative setting of Jadran Film studios, a historic film complex that will provide a dramatic backdrop for the festivities.
Themed “Breaking the Glass Ceiling,” ZGDW 2024 is poised to challenge conventional norms and champion diversity within the design realm. The festival’s ambitious agenda highlights the importance of equality, creativity, and collaboration, aiming to dismantle barriers and elevate voices that have long been marginalized.
Italy, renowned for its profound impact on the global design landscape, is this year’s partner country. The Italian design scene, while celebrated, often shadows the contributions of its female designers. In a bid to shift this narrative, ZGDW will feature a compelling exhibition spotlighting prominent Italian women designers. Highlights include the work of Elena Salmistraro and Chiara Di Pinto from Studiopepe, who will also lend their expertise through guest lectures.
A notable addition to this year’s lineup is a series of guest exhibitions that will offer a panoramic view of graphic design from across the Americas. The World Design Capital 2024, encompassing San Diego and Tijuana, will present “Percepción Peculiar,” an exploration of cultural exchanges. The Local Chile design festival will offer insights into the dynamic Chilean design scene with its exhibition “Sur Emergente,” complemented by a lecture from festival director Joaquín Béjares H. Meanwhile, the Anchorage Museum will shine a light on contemporary Alaskan design, focusing on Inuit artistry. Additionally, Barcelona Design Week will contribute two exhibitions from its “Sustainable Change” series, addressing gender perspectives and body diversity in fashion.
In a nod to cinematic history, the Studio Orson Welles at Jadran Film will showcase Croatia’s finest furniture design, a traditional highlight of ZGDW. The festival will also present an exhibition featuring the innovative works of Croatian design colleges and schools, emphasizing the future trajectory of local design. Attendees can also enjoy a vibrant market featuring direct designer-to-consumer sales and a fashion show scheduled for Thursday, September 26.
Excitement is building as ZGDW opens applications for eight distinct programs, including the prestigious ZGDW AWARD. This international design accolade will celebrate groundbreaking work with an exhibition and award ceremony at the festival’s opening.
As ZGDW 2024 prepares to unveil its rich tapestry of design innovation and dialogue, it promises to be an unmissable event that not only celebrates but also expands the boundaries of the design world.
