Biz Istanbul is a fine dining restaurant located in the majestic city of Istanbul, offering a wide range of culinary creations, as well as a breathtaking view of the Bosphorus Strait. Located in Ataturk Cultural Center, this restaurant has three areas—Has Salon, Locanta, and a Bar.
For its lighting concept, BIZ Istanbul became a winner in the Bar and Restaurant Lighting Design category at the LIT Lighting Design Awards. Thanks to the Istanbul-based LINE Lighting Design and its lead designer Mustafa Akkaya‘s architectural intent, the restaurant’s lighting layout divides the ceiling into three modules. It creates the effect of form and emphasizes the interior’s geometry.
To create illumination on a desired table surface, designers had to set up the luminaires’ angle at 10-12 degrees with the glare control concern. Another detail in the lighting design was focused on using color temperatures to create different lighting. Whether warm dim lighting (1800-2700 K) for a warmer atmosphere or cooler lighting gradually changing from 2700K to 1800K—BIZ Istanbul thought every detail through.
Even though the lighting design here is well thought out, the restaurant is a great place to visit not only during darker hours, as its terrace and large windows invite in as much natural light as possible. The artificial lighting also adjusts to the natural light during the day.
To minimize energy consumption and provide a more comfortable space for visitors, all lighting fixtures are dimmable with a DALI control system. While the specified lighting fixtures have higher luminous efficacy, 5 different lighting scenarios provide different light levels with less energy consumption. It helps diners choose for themselves how much light they would like.
The details are no less important, with shelves and steps designed with concealed fixtures to better fit the ambiance of the restaurant. The textured details in the niches and mirror fonts are made of ceramic material, and depth is created by highlighting linear graze lighting fixtures.
