Inside a Toronto Yoga and Pilates Studio Built for Focus and Recovery

Header: Riley Snelling

The new Solis Movement studio in Toronto, Canada, offers high-intensity hot yoga and Reformer Pilates, along with an ambient atmosphere to match. Designed by Simone Ferkul Projects, the space in East End portrays the subtle tension between strength and gentleness. The atmosphere, light, material, and form are adapted to the primary use of the facility, guiding the users throughout movement and exercises.

Sun-washed colours and immersive ambience

The calm ambient light and neutral tones at the entrance of Solis Movement welcome visitors. The lounge and reception create a subtle contrast to the busy cityscape outside. The slightly curved ceiling and diffused lighting create a calm yet vibrant atmosphere. A skylight on the ceiling allows natural light to enter deeply into the space, creating a sense of stillness. The neutral colour palette consists of warm, sun-washed colours that dominate the rooms and provide visual continuity and effortlessness.

Large monolithic reception desk, the focal point of the open lobby, welcomes guests into the experience that is Solis Movement. Niches for storage and retail are integrated into the custom millwork and softly illuminated to blur the line between circulation and functional spaces. A quartz water-refilling station close by highlights the importance of hydration for exercise and body renewal.

Reformer Pilates studio

The large perimeter windows that bring daylight into the pilates studio represent the centrepiece of the room. The light-filled Reformer Pilates room is designed to improve concentration and create a notion of openness and calmness needed for proper exercise. Just like the remainder of the studio, the Reformer Pilates room features a sculpted ceiling and warm, sun-washed finishes, creating continuity with the remaining space, while simultaneously supporting precision, focus, and the fluidity of movement.

Hot Yoga Sun Room

Moving on to the hot yoga studio, called the Sun Room, the users will encounter an infrared heating panel incorporated into the carefully designed ceiling. The lighting is executed in layers to highlight the sensory experience while maintaining a controlled environment. The immersive design of the Sun Room facilitates performance and rest.

Solis Movement changing rooms

The studio’s mindful approach to wellness is embodied in the changing rooms as well. The selection of warm materials accompanied by soft illumination and integrated millwork evokes the ambience of a spa, encouraging the pause and transition. Vanities, storage, and finishes reinforce privacy and cosiness, allowing for restorative preparation and post-workout experiences.

Through light, form, and material, the Simone Ferkul Projects studio invites the body to move and engage with space. The result is an atmosphere that feels both grounded and elevated, where serenity and discipline quietly coexist.
