Slot House, a large-scale residential house on the steep up-slope overlooking the Silver Lake, is conceived as a tightly stacked volume incorporated into the landscape. The challenging topography of a hillside is employed to create a spatially rich living space. A single-family house spanning over 2,400 square feet is projected by Aaron Neubert Architects.

A house on the hill
Despite the hostile environment, Aaron Neubert Architects used a layered architectural strategy that included carving, retaining, and bridging to overcome it. Recessed into the hillside, the garage serves as the foundation for the entire design. A private rear terrace, sheltered by retaining walls, stands in contrast to the more public street-facing façade.

The terrace is connected to the upper floor of the house with a bridge that enables uninterrupted movement between the structure and the natural terrain. The seamless integration between the Slot house and its environment powerfully portrays the core ambition of the project – turning the landscape and architecture into a seamless, continuous experience.

Skylight and a visual corridor
The interior of the house is dominated by the continuous skylight. The main light source of the project is aligned with the stairs, hallway, and bridge to create a flow of natural light throughout the living spaces. Located at the heart of the Slot house, the skylight brings daylight into the interior, spanning from the street-facing porch, through the house, all the way to the rear terrace. This visual corridor enhances spatial continuity while at the same time bringing natural light down the circulation spine of the house.

Slot House’s living areas
Living spaces inside the house are designed as open, flowing areas that facilitate movement and layered views. Sightlines span throughout the house, including the living room, entry porch, dining area, private terrace, and beyond, effectively connecting the inside and the outside. The framing of the panoramic views of the reservoir and the mountain is carefully designed to protect the privacy of the residents. Although expansive, Slot House remains compact in its footprint despite its size.

The design of the Slot house is a good example of the Aaron Neubert Architects’ method when working with challenging, complex sites. Known for their poetic approach to architecture, landscape, and light, the architects design beautiful spaces that enhance the human experience.

While balancing openness and privacy, the Slot House reimagines inclined site living as a distinctive spatial journey.
