Aplat Is a Lightweight Paper Lamp Designed for Easy Assembly

Header: Hay

The collaboration between Danish company HAY and a design studio CPRV has resulted in a light, sculptural lamp made predominantly from paper. The design for the Aplat Table Lamp emerged from numerous experiments with the material. The lamp’s exterior, crafted from diffused paper, radiates a gentle glow, much like the warm light of a candle.

“One of the best atmospheres is often created by simply putting a piece of paper in front of a light source.”

Lightweight, minimalist design

The lamp gets its structure from carefully crafted paper folds and creases, while the structure is supported by the rhombus-shaped base and a discreet metal hook for easier transport. The relocation of the luminaire from one place to another is also facilitated with minimal, lightweight constructions. Additionally, the lightweight paper sheets facilitate the packaging and transportation.

Easy-to-assemble flat-packed lamp

The Aplat Table Lamp is flat-packed, and the user should assemble it themselves, simultaneously uncovering and understanding the process behind its creation. The design is also responsible for the name of the lamp, as aplat means flat in French. By transforming the lightweight two-dimensional object according to the instructions, its precise angles guide you in shaping it into a simple yet visually appealing form.

Two sizes and plenty of opportunities for use

The Aplat Table Lamp is available in two sizes, large and small. The Aplat Table Lamp 440 White measures H44 × W28 × L17.5 cm and comes with a 240 cm cord. The larger version Aplat Table Lamp 660 White boasts dimensions of H66 x W42 x L26, and a silicone 240 cm cord with black fabric braiding identical to that of the smaller version. Both models require a standard, replicable LED light bulb with an inline on/off rocker switch.

Designed for versatility, they can be placed on tables, shelves, or windowsills. Due to its relatively large size, the lamp can also be used as a sculptural, self-standing floor luminaire. Finally, the design of the Aplat Table Lamp reflects CPRV’s commitment to functionality, simplicity, and materiality. Aplat Table Lamp comes with a recommended retail price of 185 EUR / 129 GBP.

The road to HAY and CPRV collaboration

The Aplat Table Lamp is the latest outcome in a long line of collaborations between the Danish design brand HAY and talented external designers from across the globe. Co-founders and Creative Directors Mette Hay and Rolf Hay believe that high-quality design should be accessible to everyone, which is why they continually partner with promising international creatives to bring new ideas to life. This philosophy led them to CPRV, a young design duo working between London and Marseille. The studio investigates how design shapes everyday life through a range of furniture, lighting, interior, and product designs.

The Aplat Table Lamp engages users, encouraging them to assemble it themselves through a process similar to origami. The experimental process behind the lamp’s creation reveals itself in the precise folds, where each carefully engineered angle transforms a flat surface into a sculptural, light-emitting object.
