Punggol Green: Exploring How To Connect Communities in Singapore

Header: DP Green

Punggol Green is an urban design project from Singapore that saw the designers, from DP Green, carefully bring in the jungle and introduce it into the community’s daily strolls and lives. Completed in May 2022 for the People’s Association, the project involved the transformation of a 1.2-hectare, 500-metre-long site situated directly beneath a viaduct, a previously underused corridor that presented both physical constraints and design opportunities.

Conceived as a social spine for the neighbourhood, the space is now a thread that ties together different parts of the community, offering recreational areas adaptable to various everyday uses. Collaboration with six government agencies and engagement with local residents through multiple rounds of public consultations helped shape the final layout, allowing the design to respond accurately to the community’s expectations and needs.

The designers carefully worked around the site, integrating new elements with the viaduct’s structural elements, such as greenery, shaded seating, open play areas, and flexible gathering spaces. People are encouraged to wander the paths and discover what’s new, what materials were used, and how this space will fit into their lives.

Punggol Green also incorporates strategies for ecological connectivity, introducing native plants and porous surfaces that help manage stormwater while creating a good habitat for local biodiversity, having been recognised by the BLT Built Design Awards for this feat.
