Nintendo has finally announced the arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2, set for release on June 5 at a retail price of $449.99 USD. The new system builds on the hybrid design of the original Nintendo Switch, adding updated hardware, new controllers, expanded online features, and a launch lineup of both new and upgraded games.
Redesigning the game
The Nintendo Switch 2 introduces the Joy-Con 2 controllers, which have been redesigned with magnetic connectors that snap onto the console and can also function as a mouse in compatible games. This new feature allows players to slide the controller across surfaces for aiming or navigation, offering an alternative input method alongside traditional controls.
The system features a 7.9-inch full HD LCD screen with 1080p resolution, maintaining the original device’s thickness while increasing display size and clarity. Processing speeds have been significantly improved with upgraded CPU and GPU components, supporting faster load times and enhanced graphics performance across both handheld and docked modes. The dock itself supports video output up to 4K resolution and accommodates frame rates of up to 120 fps, depending on the game and the connected display.
Audio performance has also been updated, featuring clearer sound quality and spatial 3D effects designed to enhance the handheld and tabletop play experience. Storage capacity has been expanded to 256 GB of internal memory, with additional storage available via microSD Express cards, which offer faster data transfer rates than previous formats.
Nintendo Switch 2 remains compatible with many physical and digital games from the original Nintendo Switch library. Some games will offer optional upgrade packs for the new hardware, providing enhanced graphics, exclusive content, and other performance improvements. Existing Nintendo Switch controllers, including the Pro Controller, can also be connected to the new system.
Social features and connectivity
One of the key new features is GameChat, a voice and video communication tool built into the system. Up to 12 players can participate in voice chat, with support for video chat using a compatible USB-C camera accessory, which is sold separately. GameChat enables up to four players to share their screens during sessions and offers safety features, including parental approval and user reporting. Until March 2026, GameChat will be available without a Nintendo Switch Online membership; thereafter, a subscription will be required.
The system’s physical package includes the Nintendo Switch 2 console, Joy-Con 2 controllers, Joy-Con 2 Grip, Joy-Con 2 Straps, Dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable, and an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.
Launch lineup and compatibility
Launch titles and upgrades include Donkey Kong Bananza, a new 3D platformer exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2; upgraded editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom with performance enhancements and added features like ZELDA NOTES, a companion app providing location guidance and game commentary; and new editions of Super Mario Party Jamboree, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond optimised for the new system.
Additional updates include a freely adjustable rear stand for tabletop play, an extra USB-C port on the top of the console for charging or accessory connection, and new accessibility options like font size adjustments, screen reader support, and speech-to-text functionality within GameChat.
At launch, Nintendo Switch 2 will also offer access to Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. This includes higher-resolution versions of games like F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and SOULCALIBUR II, along with a wireless GameCube-style controller available to subscribers.
The system’s release is accompanied by the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, an interactive software experience designed to introduce players to the system’s new features through demos and guided exploration.
