What if your furniture could be as easy to change and as fun to play with as LEGO bricks? That’s the thought behind Morfius Modular Furniture, a clever seating system created by designers Arman Farahmand, Mozhgan Banayesarshoury, and Soheil Jami from Tehran University of Art. Their innovative approach earned them a Winner spot in the SIT Furniture Design Awards.

The Morfius concept draws ideas from surprising places. The clean look and simple forms give a nod to Japanese furniture design. But the way it works, its functionality and ease of use, is inspired by the simple utility of Crocs footwear and the build-anything nature of LEGO classic bricks. Even the name, Morfius, comes from combining “More” and “Fuse,” suggesting you can get more uses and looks out of the original parts. The designers wanted to create an experience where people can use their creativity to renovate and get more from their furniture, almost like a game.

Click and connect: How Morfius works

The system is built around one type of base structure and three different pillow shapes: triangular, square, and diamond, available in various colors. Making changes is designed to be very easy thanks to what the designers call a “dotted hole structure.”

Connecting the base units involves simple fixtures underneath that hold them securely together. The pillows attach using a push-and-pull mechanism with detachable pins, making them easy to add, remove, or reposition. As a smart extra, the base of the structure also functions as a storage compartment, perfect for stashing extra pillows or accessories like optional wooden armrests when they aren’t needed.

Durable materials, endless shapes

Morfius is designed to be sturdy and comfortable. The main structure is made from plywood, chosen for its strength and nice appearance. The pillows are made of foam for comfort, with a plastic inner structure to support the connection points, all covered in soft fabric.

The real appeal lies in its adaptability. You can configure Morfius in many ways: a single armchair, an L-shaped sofa, a standard couch, a guest bed, or a long bench-like sofa. You can also personalize the look by mixing and matching the different pillow shapes and colors. This flexibility makes it suitable for all sorts of spaces, from homes and offices to children’s rooms. The designers worked hard to make sure the connections were precise, ensuring that every configuration is stable and practical, even while allowing for so much flexibility.

A creative way to furnish

Morfius is an interactive way to approach furniture. By giving users the tools to easily change their seating arrangement and appearance, the designers have created a furniture system well-suited for modern living, where spaces and needs often change. It’s a practical, adaptable, and playful solution for anyone looking for furniture that keeps up with their life.
