Recognizing the urgent need for change, NEUF architect(e)s has partnered with masonry distributor Webster & Sons and concrete manufacturer Permacon to launch DUAL, an innovative and environmentally responsible concrete brick. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in sustainable construction, showing what’s possible when architects, builders, and manufacturers work together to lower the industry’s environmental impact.
This partnership began in 2022 and was driven by a shared commitment to reducing carbon footprints while ensuring high-performance building materials. Combining their expertise, the three companies have developed a concrete brick that meets modern construction demands while significantly cutting emissions and material use.
A smarter and greener brick
DUAL is a carefully engineered solution to a long-standing problem. One of its biggest innovations is a honeycomb design, which reduces the amount of concrete used by nearly a third compared to traditional bricks. This thoughtful construction results in a lighter, more manageable product that maintains the necessary strength for masonry work while lowering its overall environmental impact.
The brick meets strict CSA standards for concrete masonry and comes with a certified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), proving a 20% reduction in life-cycle carbon emissions. This reduction is largely achieved by incorporating recycled materials into its composition, a key strategy for making construction materials more sustainable.
Another major advantage of DUAL is its versatility. The product is available in three natural shades: Zurich (grey), Petra (yellow), and Belfast (red), and two sizes: Metric Norman (57 x 90 x 290 mm) and Metric Jumbo (90 x 90 x 290 mm). Each brick features two distinct faces, one smooth and one grooved, allowing architects and builders to create customized patterns and textures. This adaptability makes DUAL suitable for a wide range of projects, from contemporary urban buildings to historical restorations.
Efficiency and aesthetics
Sustainability is just one part of the equation, but DUAL is also designed with efficiency and aesthetics. The honeycomb structure makes the brick easier to handle, simplifying installation and reducing labor time. Builders will appreciate the improved workability, while architects gain a material that enhances function and form.
