At first glance, UU Tiles might appear to be a collection of beautifully glazed ceramic tiles, but a closer look reveals an integrated system that shows how the traditional role of tiling can gain a new meaning.
Created by Unknown, Untitled, taking part in Matter and Shape in the Jardin des Tuileries, running from March 7 to 10, 2025, the UU Tiles collection includes not just plain tiles but also ceramic hooks and lamps—functional objects that sort of emerge from the finished tiled surface. Designed in collaboration with a historic tile manufacturer from Normandy, the collection challenges “the prevailing focus on mobility and flexibility in interior design, UU Tiles explores sustainability via permanence and integrated functions“, wrote the designers.
Object or surface?
The genius of the system lies in how subtle it is, as the hooks and lamps are literally part of the wall. Installed like any other tile, they retain the visual continuity of a tiled surface while also introducing new functions. The hooks extend from the wall with a curve, as if the tile itself has been pulled forward, while the lamp takes on a sculptural form, almost disappearing when switched off.
This approach aligns with Unknown, Untitled’s broader design philosophy—a balance between rationalism and material expressiveness. Rather than treating functionality as an external layer applied to a space, UU Tiles suggests a deeper integration, where architecture and daily life intersect.
Endless configurations
Available in a palette of muted and bold tones—deep green, slate blue, soft pink, off-white, and a striking red—UU Tiles allow for a wide range of combinations. Whether creating a monochromatic expanse or a playful mix of colours, the system is very adaptable. The lamps can be installed in multiple positions, functioning as either task lighting or ambient wall sconces, and the hooks, with their strong yet simple form, offer a more sculptural take on everyday storage.
For Matter & Shape, UU Tiles were used in a site-specific installation where the aesthetic of a 1970s condo lobby was mixed with the language of a contemporary sculpture. This project showed how the tiles function not just as background elements but as active participants in shaping space, making one only dream about what applications they can have in our own homes.
Unknown, Untitled
Founded in Paris in 2016, Unknown, Untitled is known for its restrained yet expressive design language. The studio’s work often finds its strength in precision, as they often reduce a concept to its most essential form while still allowing for rich material expression. With these specific collections, the UU Tiles, this philosophy shows itself in the careful attention to details and continuity, with functionality almost taking a different meaning.
