Infusing California Family Living with Feng Shui Harmony

Atherton House, a family residence designed for a professional couple and their two teenage children, is located on a one-acre site in Atherton, California. The home follows a classic “H” plan configuration: two two-story wings connected by a central double-height space. This creates a clear sense of privacy while allowing for an open connection between indoor and outdoor areas. Designed by architect Mark English, Atherton House recently won the Architectural Design—Residence category at the LIV Hospitality Design Awards.

The clients, who have experience building homes in Singapore and Hong Kong, started the project with a well-defined vision. By working closely with the architect, Mark English, the couple ensured that the design aligned with their lifestyle and cultural influences, integrating modern design elements with the calmness of Feng Shui.

Layout and flow

The home’s internal layout was developed in close collaboration with a Feng Shui consultant, whose input influenced not only the overall configuration but also the selection of finishes and furnishings. The layout prioritizes a balanced movement and energy flow throughout the house, aligning with the client’s requests for spatial harmony and functionality.

A central double-height space links the wings, bringing cohesion to the plan while acting as a light-filled hub for the home’s main social activities. In its centre, a sculptural glass and steel staircase connects the home’s two levels while acting as a focal point in the main living area: such a curved form contrasts with the house’s straight geometric structure.

Materials and interiors

The material choices and finishes were carefully selected to create a clean, minimalistic look within glass walls. Marble surfaces, glass balustrades, and polished white floors create a bright environment emphasizing natural light and openness. To soften it all up, floor-to-ceiling sheer curtains diffuse sunlight while providing privacy. Furthermore, sliding glass walls separate the interior from the garden and patio spaces, which function as extensions of the main living spaces, giving the interior an extra luxurious element: natural light and greenery.
