The LEGO Group is taking creativity and sustainability to new heights with its latest project: the Innovation Campus, a groundbreaking addition to its global headquarters in Billund, Denmark.
Officially launched on October 31, 2024, this 50,000-square-meter campus promises to be a global hub for innovation, bringing together 1,700 employees from diverse disciplines like product marketing, gaming, quality assurance, and design.
Scheduled for completion in 2027, the new campus will house one of the world’s largest libraries of LEGO elements, featuring 20,000 unique pieces in 70 vibrant colors.
A workplace designed with LEGO bricks
The Innovation Campus embodies the playful spirit of LEGO not just in its purpose but also in its creation. Partnering with CEBRA Architects, the LEGO Group invited employees to actively participate in the design process, using LEGO bricks to shape ideas for their future workspace. Over 18 months of consultations, employees helped define a design that balances functionality, creativity, and sustainability.
The resulting structure is a series of six interconnected modules, rising up to four stories, with play zones, bright atriums, and a dynamic “PlayWay” linking various departments. Emphasizing green spaces and natural light, the campus aims to spark creativity in an environment that celebrates inclusivity and collaboration.
Julia Goldin, Chief Product, and Marketing Officer describes the project as “a workplace that honors the modular design of LEGO bricks.” She emphasizes its role in fostering collaboration:
“Innovation Campus will be a global center for design excellence, enabling opportunities to explore new dimensions of creativity, from physical products to digital experiences, all under one roof.”
Sustainable design and construction
The Innovation Campus is as forward-thinking in its construction as it is in its mission. Featuring an innovative wooden structure made from FSC-certified timber, the building is designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification, reducing carbon emissions and prioritizing energy efficiency, biodiversity, and water conservation. These efforts align with the LEGO Group’s broader sustainability ambitions, which aim to minimize the environmental impact of its operations while creating inspiring spaces for its employees.
Niels B Christiansen, LEGO Group’s CEO, highlights the dual focus on creativity and sustainability:
“Not only is the building design creative at its core, but it also aligns with our commitment to reducing carbon emissions.”
A visionary campus for a global creative powerhouse
Set on a four-hectare greenfield site owned by KIRKBI A/S, the Innovation Campus represents the LEGO Group’s ongoing investment in its Billund headquarters, where over 5,900 employees from 90 countries contribute to the company’s global success. Alongside the LEGO Campus (opened in 2022) and the upcoming Kornmarken Campus (opening in 2025), the Innovation Campus reinforces Billund’s reputation as the creative heart of LEGO.
With this ambitious project, the LEGO Group is shaping the future of its workspaces and setting a benchmark for innovative and sustainable design in corporate architecture.
